for deer around Grand Forks?  I want to buy a bolt action for longer range fun but I also want it to put food on my table.  I'm thinking of getting s sps tactical and it would go over much better with the wifey if I could bring home some meat once in a while and not just a target with a tight group.

Heck yea, I think its the perfect caliber just because I shoot it.

That is more than enough. I have shot doe with a .223 and killed them just fine.

Also, if you don't know, deer season is like 3 weeks long, once per year up here.

I've been through the area a couple times but never in season.  Are there deer-a-plenty?  I've never hunted before but I'm sure as hell going to start.

Depends on what you want. If you want a buck...great, there are some. If you want a doe to stock the freezer....have at it. My buddy has the meat from 9 doe in his freezer right now from last season (November) I am not sure about the GF area, but around Minot you can usually buy extra doe tags for $20 or so a piece from game and fish online. There is usually a load of doe tags left. However, next season should be interesting as we had a pretty harsh winter.

Where are you from, usually during deer season it is cold (10-20 degrees and snowing, if we are lucky).

As for deer hunting goes you can't go wrong with a 308.  It makes absolutely no difference if you shoot 308, 270, 30-06, 25-06 or even a 243.  All are excellent choices and the only reason one maybe "better" then the other is purely personal preferance.

I'm 27 and have been shooting my model 700 in .243 since i was 12.  Last year I upgraded to an AR in .243 WSSM.

15 years and never lost a deer.  id say a 308 is plenty of gun...and my last doe of 2008 was taken at 460 meters.  well placed shots are more important than caliber.  shoot more often, and get to know your flight path and ballistics, makes hunting a lot more fun because you can confidently take the 200, 400 and even 600+ shots

I'm pretty sure he meant 50 cal is illegal for deer hunting in ND. Taken from the proclamation:
Deer Gun Season – Centerfire rifles of .22 to .49 caliber, and muzzleloading rifles of .45 caliber or larger, are legal for deer. Centerfire rifles of .50 caliber or larger using smokeless powder are prohibited.

but isn't the bullet from a 50 BMG after it leaves the rifle only .49 cal? I thought this was how it got around some federal law about rifles 50+ cal...

Tesla
They way they are getting around the 50 bans is by necking the cartridge down and using a smaller diameter bullet.

That is also my rifle

I've taken deer with 22-250, 243 Win, 6mm Rem and 308. I personally prefer the 308 since it seems to take them down with more decisiveness. I prefer a short action since I can get off repeat shots faster. Also have seen hunting partners use 225 Win, 30 TC, 280 Rem and 25-06. All worked but I was more impressed by the 280 and 25-06.
