Son started his baseball game this morning and the temp was 86.  By the end of the game it was in the 90's.  The next two teams got going and the temp climbed faster than a Francisco Liriano fastball and by 3:30 PM it was over 110 degrees.  They called the game when the radio reported heat index at 114.  On the way home the temp indicator on the vehicle indicated 115 F and "cooled off" to 114.  Its almost 7:30 PM and the temp is still over 103.
We're almost a foot behind in precip, the corn is 2 feet tall and another week of dry, hot and windy will put adios on the cattle feed and the pastures.

What side of the state are you on?

Over here on the west I think it only got to about 105. It was still 105 at about 630pm

WOW!

Us "northerners" are blown away by just hearing about this kinda heat.

You guys are getting heat; last week at my farm we had 90+ mph winds and flash flooding. Intense storms were "training" rainfall (storms just kept coming in a line). I got 6 inches of rain in a few hours!  I had cut down a 48" dia. pine tree about 30' high, days ago and woke up next morning to see it a mile down the road. A 5 foot wall of water carried it off! Spooky.

"Awful peculiar weather we're havin."

Checked out a historical document today (rainfall totals from 1900-1987) and the two driest years in that stretch were in 1934 and 1976 with '76 the driest with 9.42 inches of precip in a 12 month period.  This year, so far, we have about 4 inches and the trend for the next 90 days is dry, hot and no foreseeable precip.  We could break a record held for 30 years in precip and we tied the hottest on record in SD since 120 F in 1936 near Gann Valley with the same amount south of Faith last Saturday.
