If I'm in the lane that says "Left Turn Only"

Am I required by law to turn on my left turn signal?

How bout a right turn?

I've wondered this for a long time.....everybody seems to do it, but it seems kinda redundant

It's already pretty damned obvious you're turning.  Wouldn't you think that as soon as you entered the lane, it became your only possible course, and you were bound by law to turn.

Use the turn signal to enter the turn lane, now you are ASSumed to be in the proper lane

If you are in a lane marked in a way that you can only legally do one thing, such as a right or left turn, then once in that lane you do not have to further signal your intentions.  Yes, I still usually do so out of habit.

Not sure about the law, but common courtesy dictates that you signal your intentions while driving, that is why they put the signal on the car in the first place.

I know that cars made in Michigan don't seem to come with turn signals on them.

Other than common courtesy, it get's people's attention that you're turning there.

A little off-topic, there was a car in Kalamazoo that would use the left turn lane as an excuse to get ahead of other traffic at traffic lights.  At a red light, if the left turn lane was empty, the driver would choose that lane, and when the signal changed, he would floor it and merge back into the straight lane.

Someone with a dash cam filmed him several times, and posted the collection of incidents on youtube.

The turn signal is more for oncoming traffic that may not know its a turn lane from their side.
