I am wrapping up a two year military tour and returning back to the state in a couple of months. While I have been away I acquired a pistol. I do still have a valid MI CPL. Over these past two years I maintained my vehicle registration and residence (for voting) at my FIL's address in Metro Detroit. When I return I will temporarily reside at my vacation house up in Tawas while looking for a new place in the Detroit area.

My understanding is that I need to fill out an RI-60 when I move back and list myself as the seller and purchaser. Is this correct? Also, based on my situation, when should this be done and what address should I be using on the form? Does it really matter or is the important thing that it just gets done?

While I can't see any reason the MSP would need to call you, my guess is you'd want to tie the permit to an address they can immediately contact you at.

Honestly, from experience, you want to do it as quick as possible. If your going to be staying in Tawas, use the Tawas address for the initial registration err saftey certificate,,, if you have a contact with the police and the gun comes up for whatever reason they can really fuck up your free time depending n how they wish to precede.

Should there be a need to contact you later and they can't contact you immediately with the information on the form they will simply open a new window on their computer and search the drivers liscence database for updated address/contact information. In all reality, if they pull your information for the pistol it's very likely they will do an immediate database check for updated information anyway. Even when they have your dl in hand any cop worth a damn will check against the database to verify its correct, along with wants and warrants.

Basically, it should be done as soon as possible.
I'd use the address tied to your DL/the SoS office has, which should also be the address you are using as your residence.

Save yourself the headache.

Thanks everyone...!

I just checked MCL 28.422(2). I'm thinking this may apply for the timing: (2) A person who brings a pistol into this state who is on leave from active duty with the armed forces of the United States or who has been discharged from active duty with the armed forces of the United States shall obtain a license for the pistol within 30 days after his or her arrival in this state.

I'm still going to do this as soon as possible. I just have to see what my house hunting situation looks like once I get back.
