I grew up in Richmond. Right now I work for Ford in Chicago. We live in a nice area in Indiana with award winning schools. They have opening at the Flat  Rock plant. Question for all of you downriver guys. Where would you move your Wife and three beautiful daughters? My 5 year old is in accelerated classes already; so good schools are important.

Thanks ahead of time!!

Oakland county, and commute
Or possibly Ann Arborish,

But I would say Oakland county

Just moved back to Royal oak after retiring, schools are good, area is good, wife (from California) and kids (Kansas, California and Washington) think it's the greatest thing ever

How many minutes are you willing to drive each way to work?

Does your wife need anything specific (limited job field, commute distance, etc.) for her job?

Oakland County seems to be the happening place, especially northern Oakland County. However, this is going to be over an hour each way to the Flat Rock Assembly Plant.

Saline has pretty good schools and is about a 45 minute commute to the plant.

Ann Arbor is a liberal city, but has good schools and is a 'big' city compared to most of the southwestern suburbs. It's about a 50 minute commute to the plant.

Plymouth is about 45 minutes to the plant and is a nice area to live.

Novi is about 40 minutes to the plant and is a bustling part of town.

South Lyon is about 55 minutes to the plant, but has a good school system and is a newly developing suburb so it's relatively easy to get a house on an acre or two, or more. It's hard to do that in most of metro Detroit anymore.

It looks like Brownstown Twp. actually has some good schools and is pretty close to the plant.

There's just not much out that far. You're sort of getting out into the country a little bit.

What he said,

To put it in perspective, I live in the 14 and Woodward area and have neighbors that work in Saginaw, Flat Rock, Jackson, Ann Arbor, and Lansing (and one in grayling, but he's kinda special). It's going to depend a lot on what you want the neighborhood you live in to be like, how you feel about driving, and what you want to have nearby.

I think the best blend of neighborhood quality and driving time might be Canton.

If my recollections are good,  I seem to remember Grosse Ile being pretty upscale.

C'mon back. You can take our place because as soon as we sell our house we are moving south. The wife and I are life long Michiganders, but we want out asap.

We came (I came anyway, they followed) back up from the south,
The amount of racism (a county school superintendent told me to "check your privelage sir, your whiteness is not going to get you any special consideration here") and my wife was continually harassed by "men of rich vibrance" who would make outright statements like "hey fine ass white girl, I'll give you that black baby you always wanted" (never understand the predatory behavior towards me than 13 year old daughter)
, general ignorance, quality of normal public schools, and a rising crime (violent for the most part) rate had a lot to do with it

The fact that people lost their fucking minds over a 16th of an inch of snow, and insanely hot and humid weather were also minuses in my mind.

Also, the duck hunting is magnitudes better here

Our daughter has been in Charlotte for about 7 years. She has 3 kids in a good school and she has never indicated any of the things you mentioned. Maybe a regional thing? She is quite happy there and says she will never move back home, thus we are moving to that area of the N.C. I hunted, shot competitively and fished for 40+ years, but age and health restrictions have ended those days. Good luck in Mich. with the tax and spend rinos running the state. They love to dream up new taxes but can't wrap their pea brains around the concept of cutting expenses, especially entitlements.

Thanks guy!

After a few hours of research we came up with pretty much the same results.

Charlotte is gonna be a lot like metro Detroit, neighborhood is the everything,

Eventually we'll get some other shitty governor, all the states (4) I've lived in I the last 10 years had pretty much the same complaints regardless of who was in office. What chaps my ass about Michigan is the damn uninsured/medical rider on the car onsurance. I bet your rate gets cut by half or better when get there.

I am going to be the neutral voice here. What will you be gaining that is so important that you will remove your family from an environment that is thriving and put them into an environment where their quality of life 'may' decline? I would start looking at the cost of living between the areas, the quality of schools (award winning vs Charlie Sheen winning?), housing prices, how quickly you can sell your house in IN, road conditions, job situation for the wife, etc.

If it was up to me, I would be resisting uprooting my family from where you are and moving them to an unknown, unless there was a MAJOR reason and money likely wouldn't be one of them. Just another viewpoint to consider...
