Hello. I have a question regarding my municipal employee retirement system (MERS) account. I had 5 1/2 years of service with a department that offered a defined contribution retirement plan through MERS. About 1 1/2 years ago, I switched to a department that offers a defined benefit pension through MERS. My question is if I can use my 5 1/2 years of service from my previous department toward my new pension plan? I am clear that I can use it for vesting purposes, however, I don't know if it can be used to increase my benefit (larger pension check). I am hoping the 5 1/2 years of service at the first department is not all lost. I have contacted MERS about this but I have received various answers. Anyone out there familiar enough with MERS to help me out? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

LJPR.com  might be able to help.  They deal almost exclusively with police and fire pension investments.  I think it all depends on the plan.
