Hi all! I will be moving to MI in the coming weeks from Arizona ( so ready to be out of the heat!) anyways we have virtually no gun laws here except where you can and cant carry, so I am just wondering what I will need to do once I get there if anything for the weapons I own. I did try and read the sticky at the top for the gun laws but I don't really understand the legal jargon. If anyone could dumb it down for me it would be much appreciated.

Welcome. What part of Michigan? Long guns are no problem. No mag limits. No SBR. You must for the time being register handguns but that may be ending soon. We have concealed carry.

Do you have an arizona ccw license?  I know you don't need one, but they're still available.  If you do have one, they can wave the 6 month residency requirement.

When the finance and I first get there we will be living with her patents in the grand haven area. But we are hoping to get a house in the grand rapids area. I'm trying to get into the trooper academy class starting on the 28th of october so that might delay our house shopping. Is there a website on how and where to register my handgun?

Thanks for the info, Wallace45

Not sure if there's a website. But when you get to her parents, you go to the local PD or county sheriff's office and pick up a Permit to Purchase. One form for each handgun, you'd list yourself as both the purchaser and seller, and you'd get it notarized. It's a pain in the ass, I know. But there's a bill in the Senate right now that will get rid of that (it's already passed the House).

Couple other things:
Suppressors are okay. That was just changed about a year ago.
No SBRs/SBSs.
Open carry is legal, but be aware of the Pistol Free Zones.
Concealed carry is only allowed with a license. $105 for the application, and roughly $100 for the required class (will vary depending on who's teaching). Most of the other states will recognize the Michigan permit though, with the exception of 5 or 6.

Things have been progressing nicely with our gun laws in recent years.  It wouldn't surprise me to see this happen before too long.

There are some guys here, and on MGO that are very active in these areas.

ETA:  MGO is Michigan Gun Owners.

You can print it off of the stickied link and list yourself as the purchaser and the seller. Fill out the rest of the form. Mail the little sections for MSP and County to your local Sheriff or PD. Keep a copy for your own records for 30 days.

We're fighting to get this repealed and it may be gone as soon as this year but that's no guarantee.

It's been a few years since I went through this, but I believe you can't register a pistol until you are a MI resident, meaning you have a MI driver's license.  If you don't have a CCW/CPL permit, then the laws get really goofy when it comes to possession of a handgun in MI.  I didn't worry about it too much because I had a CCW permit from another state.  Get your residency switched over, then do the pistol registration.

I'm in the GR area, when you get here and get settled, let me know if you want a recommendation for a realtor, we found a good one just a couple years ago.  There are several ranges around GR, so there are places to shoot depending on what you're into.

You gotta register your handguns when you get there. Will probably have to get your michigan drivers license first and some sheriffs insist on a waiting period before allowing you to register the handguns you imported..

growing up in Muskegon, youll love Grand Haven. but all i have to say is good luck with the MSP. just keep a backup in mind seeing that in the past 10 years the MSP has let go many troopers due to budget issues. in fact, thats how i eneded up in Texas when the Troopers did recruiting in Detroit back in 09 to hire some of the troopers that got let go up there, PM sent man,
