Howdy,
Just completed my cpl safety course, unfortunatly we had some clowns and by the end he didn't really cover much about the application part. What is the most simple, straight forward way? I read you can get the app at 3 different places, you file at the county clerk but I need finger prints. Should I just go to the sherrif, ask for an app and fingerprints right then and there? Fill out app, take photo to county clerk and pay the cash? Do I get a copy of my prints to take in? Should I call and schedual with the sherrif or just go in? guidance is greatly appreciated. |

I think the specific manner in which it's done, how, and where.......is somewhat dependant on what county you live in.
Although they should all be generally similar. In my county (Grand Traverse) you can pick up the application from the sheriff or county clerk. A quick call to the clerk to inquire about WHEN you can get fingerprinted may help with your personal scheduling, and minimizing time off work or whatever. In my county, you hand the clerk your stuff and walk 100 yards around the corner to the jail and get printed. But they only do CPL fingerprinting during certainl hours, on certain days. Your county may not be as simple. Show up at the wrong time, and you'll be coming back another day for the prints. Basically, you want to show up at the clerk's office with a completed application, photo, check, and your certificate. The $105 fee you pay should cover the cost of fingerprinting, and The clerk should direct to as to when and where to get it done. |

In my county (Lenawee) you just go to either the County Clerk's office or Sheriff's Dept and tell them you want to apply for a CPL. They provide the applicant with a packet that includes a complete list of instructions detailing exactly what you need to turn in with your completed application, when fingerprinting is done, etc.
Don't worry to much in advance what you need to do because they will help you through the process. In my area the Sheriff's Dept and County Clerk personnel are very helpful and are always glad to answer questions. |

In Kent county, I took the form, 2 passport sized photos, the training cert, and check down to the County Clerks office. They verified the info, gave me a receipt to take to the Sheriff's office to get finger prints done. Here is the CPL License Guide, the last two pages are the actual form you can fill out, print. http://michigan.gov/documents/ri-012_7736_7.pdf |

Well I did it, I was making too big a deal about it. In emmet county you just fill out the app, take the app, photos, certificate and $105 to the county clerk. There they gave me a receipt and I went the the UPS store (strange) to have my prints done.
Whole thing took maybe 20 minutes. thanks all! |

You can get the application in a number of places, or just print it out yourself. You can find copies at your local police station, and probably at the County Clerks, and the Sheriff's office. You need to be fingerprinted at the Sheriff's office. You can have the picture taken anywhere, but it must be the same type you would get for a passport, you may, or may not be able to get your picture taken at the clerks office, and if you do, they will probably charge you about $15, better to do it yourself for free, or get it done at the store for about $4-$-5. Once you have your finger prints taken, and photo just go to the clerks office, and give everything to them, and your fee. You do not need to schedule an appointment. |
