First off, I'm a full time dad in the daytime, part time gun counter jockey at a regional Big Box sporting goods store, and a CPL instructor. Time and money are both rather tight these days, so my question is this.
What sort of events, competitions, shoots etc, are there to be had in west Michigan? I've shot the IDPA at South Kent Sportsman's club a few times, but its getting very crowded, and waiting an hour+ to shoot for 1 minute isn't as appealing as it used to be before the kid arrived. I'm looking for mostly handgun events as I cant afford to feed a rifle for a CMP shoot regularly. I'd rather keep it within an hour or so of the GR area, so what sort of things are out there? |

Apparently South Kent has started some type of "plate shoot" as well. I haven't been to one yet, but I've been hearing about it for a couple of months now. I know there are a couple other clubs that shoot IPDA around the area, but I've been out of the competition thing for awhile.
There's also ACTS at Centerline, but that's mainly rifle and you'll wait longer between stages than what you're used to (great matches though). |

Interesting, I'd heard of that before but thought it was farther away for some reason. How many rounds do you normally shoot in a day and how long is the day? If you mean the ACTS matches at Centerline, it usually takes us about an hour to get there from the Cascade area. There are a few guys from the GR area that shoot ACTS, but the guys I know haven't been making it to many matches, including me. I plan on it taking the whole day, leave GR around 8am and plan on being back in GR around 5pm. I've only shot maybe 4 matches down there, but of those only one time did we get out early. Don't take this as bitching, they are great matches and it's a great group of people to spend a day with, but sometimes it takes awhile to get all the shooters through the stages. Typical round count at an ACTS match is 150 rounds of rifle, 50 of handgun. Each match is different, and I normally take at least double the expected round count. If you're interested in checking out a match, send me an IM and I'll get you some more info. There's a match this Saturday, but unfortunately I can't make it. |
