I am in the thinking about putting together an ar pistol.  I have a spare 16" upper and would like to use that, keeping the barrel length intact so that the upper can be used as a rifle again.  I would like to be able to CCW with the pistol (even though I probably wont). I posted a similar question at Migunowner.com and got a conflicting responses, some stating that the overall length must be under 30"  to qualify as a pistol in MI.

Does anyone have any insight into this?

Thanks

Michigan laws do look at any firearm less than 30" as a pistol.  However, federal laws do not necessarily agree, as there is no maximum length limit for a handgun in federal law.  Provided you could find a buffer tube short enough to bring the overall length under 30", according to Michigan statutes it would be a pistol.

There is also an Attorney General opinion on rifles with an overall length less than 30".  It can be found here

A phone call or email to the MSP may be in order to ensure there is nothing else being missed, and to CYA WBH.  If everything meets the requirements, make sure to register the lower as a pistol, to avoid any issues down the road.
