Hey my co workers brother wants a AR15 built I was just wondering what if any AR restrictions there are for Michigan. I checked the links in the faq but some of them are broken and I didn't find any useful info.

barrel 16" unless pistol. If AR pistol no VFG or stock. Must register.

No stock, less than 26", with VFG= AOW

26-30" stock collapsed= MI pistol. Must register.

26" less=SBR

Are those metric inches? Or is this bait for a "10" extra inches" joke?

That pretty much sums up how confusing MI/Fed law can be. Simple version, make it a 16"or longer barrel, M4 or similar stock. No restrictions otherwise.

So A2 stock + 18inch barrel = win? Bayonet lugs flash hiders all ok?

Umm, you're going to have to cite something for those numbers. Everything is WRONG except for the first line. You also need to distinguish which rules are MI specific and which are federal. As always, I'm perfectly happy to eat crow if you can contradict me when stating facts. Making sure only correct info is posted is more important than the tiny bit of ego I have invested in an online posting.

It should read:

All federal restrictions apply. For all non-NFA guns, overall length must be 26" with a 16" barrel for rifles, or 18" barrel for shotguns. No forward grips for any pistols, as that would make them AOWs.

In addition, MI has additional rules. All handguns, and all long guns under 30" overall must be registered as pistols. SBR, SBS, and silencers are explicitly verboten. Other NFA toys are allowed.

More specifically to the OP's question, there are essentially no restrictions on non-NFA AR15s in MI, meaning an overall length of at least 26" with a barrel length of a least 16". If its overall length is less than 30", it just has to be registered the same as a pistol.

Sorry if this is a thread Necro, but my father and I are looking at purchasing an upper build kit for my brother, who lives near South Haven, MI. THis was the most pertinent thread i could find regarding my question... Neither of us live in MI so we're just trying to make sure we dont cause him any problems with it.

So 16" barrel and M4 style collapseble stock is good to go?, no extra stuff requried (registration etc?) THat should put it at about 28" total length by my measurements ( I could be wrong, I'm from WA and all)?

Also any suggestions of stores for him to get a stripped Lower at around South Haven (West side of the state?)

And any other goofy AR laws we should be concerned with (Mag size limits, bayonet lugs, shoulderthingthatgoesup)?

A carbine with a 16" barrel, and a standard telescoping stock (not a Para USA folder) is going to be over 30", and not a MI handgun.

No anti-bayonet lug laws, magazine capacity restrictions, etc here. Plenty of other stupid ones, but not those.

rifle from 26-30' stock collapsed = MI pistol. NOT 36-40" OVER 30" its a rifle
we cant even have SBR's her in MI unless it's a class3 machine gun.

Were did you get your info?

Don't forget about C&R SBS's and SBR's.

Is it possible to build an AR15 with a 16" barrel and a telestock shorter than 30"?

I just grabbed a carbine and a tape measure -

16" barrel + 8" receiver + 7" buffer tube = 31"

Sorry! That was a ton of fail LOL

I must have been half asleep when I wrote that... Messed up my 4's and 3's...

Fixed now though.

My bad.

I'd like to know this as well. I'd really like to say that there isn't, but there's probably some obscure extra short collapsible stock/buffer tube combo out there somewhere.

I thought I saw a folding stock for the ar15 somewhere...That would be about the only way that could happen, imo.

Just as a further clarification, short barreled rifles/shotguns can never be a machine guns as they require a pull of the trigger for every round fired to be considered rifles or shotguns. Machine guns do not have length restrictions because they are neither rifles nor shotguns.

Michigan's SBS/SBR rules are silly. I had to get a full auto saiga 12 to get a shorter barrel.

Graafschap Hardware in Holland has several (including one from Spike's Tactical last time I was in there about a week ago).
I believe they do FFL transfers as well (will find out if they do and how much they charge and repost).
They have a decent selection of AR furniture and accessories (as well as rifles, shotguns and pistols... especially considering they're primarily a hardware store), and are more than happy to order you anything you need if they don't already have it.

::edit:: They do FFL transfers for $35.
