Anyone know this happened?  The DNR is now the DNRE due to Gov. Granholm's Executive Order.

yep happened back mid january IIRC. The way I understand (as explained by a DEQ Investigator that I know) is that they combined the two divisions under one director. They do however "function" as two distinct divisions.

Now that's the way to save the state some money, make three different agencies that all do the same bullshit job.

So wait, lets split the DNR and DEQ to save money, and so they can focus better on the specific tasks they take. How long ago was that? Now, lets start making them 1 again. Aint government grand?

How much money do you think they spend every time they re-organize one of these agencies?  Just the stationary changes alone is probably millions, not to mention moving people around, buying them all new office furniture, new signs for their doors, new logos for all the vehicles, etc.

The split of the DNR was in the early nineties.  Engler said it was to save money but it was really to split the regulatory agency off and then slowly phase it out.  And it really didn't save that much because they laid off staff but built new buildings for the MDEQ.  Putting them back together hasn't changed anything because they still have their own buildings and no one was laid off.  Plus they both still have different websites with the headings of both websites being the MDNRE.  It was a way for the governor to say the state was getting smaller by having fewer departments when it didn't actually get smaller.  The actual order was signed last summer or fall but it went into effect in January.

Lance, CA is correct.

The merger was announced last summer and took effect sometime in January.

I remember hearing talk of Jenny making the top post a political position. Any truth to this?

The executive order was issued on October 8, 2009 and went into effect on January 13, 2010.  I know she wanted to make the director of both MDNRE and MI Dept. of Agriculture political appointments and take away some of the powers of the Natural Resources Commission but I don't think it actually happened.  Rebecca Humphries got the job as director of MDNRE and she was the chief of the wildlife division before that.
