Well, it looks like my job is taking me to the Detroit area sometime in the next few months. I've been looking at houses mostly in the Royal Oak area of Detroit.

I've been struggling to figure out what the gun laws are in Michigan. I'd appreciated any input into whether I'm understanding this right.

I can get a concealed pistol license once I've lived there for 6mo as a resident. But, I have to take a course there and can't use my Ohio course. I also can't get an out of state license, or keep my Ohio license (Ohio law) while I'm accruing 6month of MI residence time because MI only accepts licenses from your state of residence.

It looks like I do not have to register my AR because it is >26 inches with the stock collapsed.

My shotguns are fine.

I'm most confused about the pistols.

It looks like Michigan used to have registration ("safety inspection") but no longer does. It appears that I can take my handguns there without need to register them. But, if I buy a new pistol once I'm there, I have to get a license to purchase that pistol before buying it which amounts to registration of that pistol?

Do I have that correct or do I need to go get the license to purchase even for guns that I have already bought and am bringing into the state? I can't find any reference to this or how soon I would need to register them if so.

Within the Detroit area it looks like there is at least one place that does 3-gun matches - Livingston gun club, as well as one place that does IDPA the Racoon hunters club in the Detroit area.

Is the livingston club the only sportsmans club that is open for members to come anytime and shoot? It looks like the other have very limited hours because someone from the club has to be present to supervise (weird).

Thanks for any input,

Thanks for any input,

In Michigan you have to have the Safety Inspection aka registration done as soon as possible once relocating to the state. You don't have to take the pistols into the police station any longer, but will need to get a license to purchase, fill them out, mail back to the police.   When I moved up here a few years ago, I couldn't find anything that says you have to register in XX days, just says as soon as possible.   Believe you also need a MI drivers license/ID  to accomplish this but could be mistaken.

When I moved back home to MI from AZ, with a P2000, I was told by the police, I need MI ID. In order to get MI ID you need 90s day of living here + a bunch of paper work like bills ect.
I still need to have mine registered. I asked the police how long I had, and since I was moving back here, the 10 day thing didn't exactly apply. He couldn't give me a time frame. The cop I spoke too was not to much help.
He told me that just bringing the firearm across stateline was illegal....which its not. So his words meant nothing to me. I planned on going this week.

I found the same thing when I moved here from MN. They want you to register your pistols, but you can't unless you're a MI resident, which is a major expense and pain in the neck.  I called the MSP (Michigan State Police) and they told me that they don't have a timeline as far as when you need to become a MI resident, and that you are fine with them as long as your handguns are otherwise legally possessed (see below).

If you have a valid permit from your home state, you can legally possess your handguns and possibly carry them (depending on reciprocity).  You would not want to have a handgun in Michigan and not have either a valid out of state permit or have it registered.

Well, I'm 20, and bought it legally in AZ. In AZ, you do not need to have it registered, and open carry for under 21 is legal there. I know in MI, you can buy a ahndgun at 18 from a private sale, its the same deal in AZ.

2. Can a resident of another state legally possess a pistol in Michigan?

If you are a non-resident of Michigan with a valid concealed pistol permit from your home state, Michigan will recognize your permit (MCL 28.432 & MCL 28.432a). However, you must carry in conformance with any and all restrictions appearing on the permit. You are subject to Michigan's concealed pistol law including but not limited to restrictions on where a concealed pistol may be carried. Without a CPL, a non-resident may not have a pistol in Michigan.

It seems like becoming a Michigan resident is no sweat. Just show up to the DMV with ID and proof of employment and a mortgage in MI.

Doing so will start the clock ticking on the 6mo needed before I can apply for a MI concealed pistol license but the act of becoming a MI resident will also make it such that an out of state concealed carry license is no longer good in MI (has to be a license from your state of residence to carry in MI). It should also allow me to register my pistols (grr...this registration stuff blows).

I don't see any way around being unable to carry concealed for at least 6mo.
