I was looking to sell my firearm () and I talked with a place over the phone and they said I need my firearm registration card.  What is this?  I have the initial yellow purchase permit that I used to purchase the pistol but I'm not sure if that's the registration card or if they mail me something else or what.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

You don't need tha card. Maybe that's just their policy but it's not law. I destroy my cards after 30 days.

Probably not best to sell to a shop either, they won't give you crap for them. Sell them to individuals.

The yellow card really doesn't mean a thing any more, I do know several shops are insisting on a serial number inquiry if your handgun was registered under the new system.  To get one you go to your local police/sheriff where you initially took your paperwork and request a serial number inquiry, it proves you properly registered the firearm.  Under the old system the green card was proof you took in the handgun to have it registered and shops are still accepting the green card, but there's no proof you did the paperwork under the new system save for a serial number inquiry and that's why more shops are starting to want the inquiry.

As an aside, I don't think throwing away your copy of the paperwork is very prudent.  I always save my RI-060's and I have found multiple data input errors cause by the MSP Firearms Unit that needed to be corrected and actually having your paperwork makes it a bit simpler to get it done.  Whenever I purchase a handgun I now hand deliver the RI-060 to the police station and wait while they input the information and get a serial number inquiry printed immediately.  The folks here in Mount Pleasant are really helpful, I buy lots of handguns and they don't mind printing it off immediately to be sure everything is done correctly.

I personally won't purchase a handgun from a private individual unless they have either the old green card or a serial number inquiry, I've seen way too many clerical mistakes made by the Firearms Unit, and a couple of good ones made by the owners...

Selling to a shop is a sure way to get ripped off. They have to make their profit margins to stay in business, and guess where they're coming from.

I've bought and sold via all of these:

Armslist (exactly like craigslist but for guns)
ARfcom EE
Glocktalk classifieds
MIGunowners.org classifieds
TheHighRoad.US (do not use .org) classifieds

Why shouldn't I use thehighroad.org?  I've been a member of that website for a while now.  Is there a big difference between that an .us?

.org was taken over by the former sysadmin, illegally, and there is now a court battle to regain control of the domain initiated by the rightful owner of THR, Oleg Volk.
