Hey guys,
I've only really gone camping at MI state campgrounds that have running water and flush toilets as well as showers but I'm working on getting items to do those things myself. That being the case I will still have the comforts I enjoy but be able to go camping pretty much anywhere. So what are some Rustic campgrounds/sites that you can drive right to the spot? I'm thinking of a place where there would be very few if anyone around. Thoughts? Links? Thanks. |

Even then alot of times more than less, we go out on State Land. Just "in the woods". Hell, I can take you where you won't see anyone, let alone rarely hear anyone for awhile. Sorry no links, no such place exists in technology world. Pathfinder |

The wife kids and I camped here alot. One year we camped off our pontoon. Plenty to do in the area close to lake Huron also .

Yes, the "link foo" works... Nice addition! What I meant is if the OP wants to go where there are no people, then he/she must go "in the woods". Your link still pointed him to a "campground". There is a differance, there are no "links/URLs" that can tell you about a good place in nature. Because if there were a link, then it wouldn't be nature anymore... It would be a "campground" with generators & fat kids eating potatoe chips watching you while you cook burgers over a "fire-ring". Pathfinder |

Pigeon River Country/Green Timbers Rec Area
Outside Vanderbilt, exit 290ish off of I-75. Gotta hike it in in some spots, some areas you can drive right up. Really beautiful area. I've been camping there once, they have a couple of old fire watch cabins you can explore with awesome views. Lots of trails, streams, and rivers....no creature comforts at all. edit: made link hot. |

Thanks for the posts so far, keep them coming.
I was browsing threads in the General Outdoor Discussion forum and there was a pic thread that I was looking through that got me to wanting to find a spot similar to the pic below and was curious if it's possible in Michigan especially in the Northern Lower.. |

Pathfinder I think the State Forest campground may be a good start for me because as I've said before I've only ever really done the flush toilet/shower/electric thing (State Parks). I'm thinking that a State Forest Campground may be less active or populated? Thoughts on that? Pathfinder, Give me more info or show me on a map if you could, just so I can have an idea. What type of state land can you just go anywhere on and camp where ever you want? I'm assuming you can't just do that anywhere right? Thanks, |

Northern Mich. Natl Forest campgrounds
Might be just what you are looking for. Most are isolated, few campers there and drive up. |

If it is national forest land, you can. DNR website is your friend. Do you have 4WD? Get a ORV sticker and ORV map off the DNR website - drive out into the bigger trails until you don't see anyone. Most of my best camping trips start without a destination. |

To the OP, yes the state forest campgrounds are less populated. When there is just a pit toilet, and a spigot for water, most people won't use them.(But beware some rigs could show up and run their gennys) Go to one of these first, then explore the trails around them. You will be surprised at the number of little "out of the way" spots you can find. |

Hello Campers!!! Come to the U.P. !!! The area around White Fish Point, Paradise, Taquamenon, etc. has lots of primitive, drive-to sites. Indian Lake near Manistique is also very cool. Lots of places up north toward Munising (also between there and Grand Marais)!!! Drop into Nahma and go to the Nahma Inn for fabulous food. Camping up on FHW 13 toward Wetmore. You want it... we got it!!! Bring money... we need it!! Mike |

Thanks, National Gaurd artillary range between Fredric & Waters... We go there alot!!! The most you may see are NG flying overhead or if you run upon some gaurd on manuveres, you can BS with them... Usually they are pretty bored & enjoy the company. But More than likely, you see NOBODY! Pathfinder |

Try Hoist Lake trails, it.s in north east Mich. Will require a little back packing ( not much) and it is very nice. Not real busy and it is a bit out of the way. Hoist lake |

Nice trout fishing area at Haakwood just North of Wolverine. I'm a couple miles north of it and I fish there from time to time. They have one or two well pumps and some out houses. Only seen campers in there on holidays so far other than one or two. Probably fill up for the 4th. Then just a few miles farther you get to the Burt lake state park with all the amenities.

Can we "carry" now in MI National Forests?
No!!! That is the only place we can't... Pathfinder Whoa, back up on that one. National Parks are not the same as National Forests. Nat. Parks are relatively few and small in Michigan- you can find them listed in this article. National Forests make up large chunks of the northern and western L.P.; there are no special restrictions there. I've carried various kinds of firearms in National Forests for about three decades now. There are some DNR rules you might want to know. If you are walking around with a long gun you will be presumed to be hunting, so having a small game license saves a lot of argument. There is a requirement to wear something orange in the cold weather months (read about it at this URL: http://www.mi.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10366_37141_37704-32270––,00.html ). As pointed out earlier, if you drive back into the woods in a National Forest, the only time you'll ever see another human there is on holiday weekends or deer season, so use your own judgement. |

I just got back from a few nights camping at Leelanau State Park. Its a primative SP. About 50 sites, pretty well seperated by trees, but still similar to other SP's you've probably been to. No showers/bathrooms, just 8 or so pit toilets (very clean). There's an additional 1300 or so acres of wilderness w/ trails that I didn't get a chance to explore. Day use area has a lighthouse, so you get some traffic there, but they stay out of the campground.
Leading up to the 4th (we were there 7/1-3) it wasn't full. I would assume that if it wasn't full on a holiday week, it probably never is! We were on site 47, which I highly recommend if you visit. That might be a nice next step for you if you don't want to do the forests yet. (I've done some backpacking into the forests. That's the way to get away!) K |
