What's the correct method of selling a rifle to someone out-of-state?

Does it have to originate from an FFL or can I just mail it to an FFL in another state?  What shippers allow rifles?

I assume a pistol sale to an out-of-state individual needs to originate from a local FFL?

Neither rifles nor pistols legally need to be sent FROM a dealer, however, sometimes the receiving FFL will require it.  Long guns can be sent through US Mail, but handguns must go through UPS or Fedex next day.

If you send a pistol out of state, it will still be "registered" to you here in Michigan unless you have a dealer ship it out for you.

The one time that I shipped out a handgun, I simply sent a certified letter to the MSP records department letting them know that I had sold the gun and shipped it out of state.  I provided copies of the bill of sale as well as the FFL to which I was sending the handgun.
