Sorry for the cold link. I love how the detroit free press always includes gun control in any answer they come up with to detroit. These are their "key" steps to making detroit better in a long article. Number three is their usual crap about guns. Thankfully I don't buy the paper, just check them every so often on the net. Mitch was pretty bad today also. In the article they compare San Jose, Ca. to detroit because SJ just passed detroit in population. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080323/OPINION01/803230493 Key steps • The next president must increase support for local law enforcement programs that work, especially to those cities that have a plan for collaborative, community-wide crime prevention programs. Such assistance should include innovative new programs, such as a national campaign to ensure all city streets are well lit. • Second, the president ought to strengthen the federal government's commitment to prisoner re-entry programs that help hundreds of thousands of offenders adjust to their communities. In Michigan and other states, such efforts are reducing crime and recidivism. The Second Chance Act passed by the U.S. Senate earlier this month is a good start. • Third, the next administration must make gun control legislation a priority, as virtually all big-city mayors and police chiefs have urged. At least, the president and Congress ought to renew the assault weapons ban, establish a national data base for guns and gun owners, and require background checks for gun show purchases. • Fourth, Washington should encourage local rules that require police officers to live in the cities they serve. It could do so by making only cities with such residency rules eligible for certain grants. • Finally, the federal government must do more to prevent crime. The good news is that, over the last 15 years, the U.S. Justice Department has started to focus on street violence, as well as white-collar and organized, crime. The best federal programs have partnered with local law enforcement agencies and community-based groups. |
| Why would the Fed and President be responsible for the screwed up conditions in Detroit? If Detroit wants to improve their image and fix their problems, then let them do it. I can't stand how all that city wants to do is sit on its ass and whine about how bad they got it and expect somebody to come in and solve their problems, just so they can turn around and screw it all up again. Just flush the damn thing and get it over with, already... |
| +1 on getting ride of Kwame. I quite my retirment job. I was working in a building located in the Fair City. With all the crap, it amazed me how some people still support him. If you add up the suv, boat cruise, law suit, and etc...., the man is a bag of shit. One lady told me that he is young, smart, and motivated. IF He's so smart, why does he keep stepping on his own crank and getting cought. It did not go over very well, but who cares. |
