We're trying to put together a bus trip to CMP for sometime in April..original thought was the 19th or 26th but the 26th is the tentative date for the other get together, so ??

The plan is to rent a bus, have it start in Lansing, probably head over somewhere near Howell, down to Cabelas and then off to CMP. Cost would be approximately $20.00 per person for the ride. We'll probably also stay at Cabelas for an hour or so on the way back so people can do some shopping.

Any interest? CMP said they'd open the store for us, even though they're usually closed on Saturday and the bus company seems to be willing to allow us to transport rifles, which kind of surprised me, to be honest.

Do you have to "qualify" under usual CMP rules to buy rifles / ammo from them?
It is sounds really good if some of requirements (BS memberships at least) could be waived.
I assume that trip will take 1 day? (To Port Clinton, OH)?

I'd be interested if we don't need to be part of a CMP club to purchase.  Probably could get my old man to go too.

CMP accepts SAFR memberships. I used mine to buy ammo last August.

Sounds cool If I can convince the wifey to let me go.

I'd most likely be up for it as I've been planning a trip down anyways.  You can join the Garand Collectors Association pretty cheap if you need to meet requirements.

If you could get it to originate in Grand Rapids I would be interested.

Per Ti45 I'm joining SAFR, so I'd definitely go.

Not sure about the bus trip as of yet, but I'll be joining SAFR as well.

I may have some interest.  I would be willing to meet at Cabelas, as long as the bus could stop there on the way back as well.  Between Cabelas, and the CMP it could be a wallet draining experience.

So do they still actually have any Garands left at the store? I would definitely want to pick up a good Field Grade.

Would be difficult to make GR and still keep within the allotted time..but Lansing is only an hour from Grand Rapids. I drive further than that to work each day.

You would have to belong to a club of some type to purchase from CMP. It's a minimal expense.

Hopefully will have this pinned down this week..we're trying to get the 19th but its not cast in stone yet.

If you guys are planning to go down just to see what the outside of the store looks like, a Saturday would be a good day to do that.  herwise,
CMP North Store operating hours are Wednesday - Friday 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.  Store will not be open Saturdays, except for special events which will be announced.

The new hours seem kind of stupid - let's make everyone take a day off of work to come to our store.  Go figure.

Sorry for the news.

Reading is good!

Oh, and if there are a couple from GR going, we can carpool to Lansing to catch the bus.  That is if I end up going.

I'm an idiot.  Didn't read the first post to the end.

That's nice that they will open up on a Saturday.  Makes it a lot more convenient.

Besides being a member of an affiliated club, does anyone know the basic steps to purchasing a CMP rifle?  Too lazy to read the entire CMP website right now.

A little off topic but, because of a physical problem[totally disabled] I can't drive over 1 hour on a good day and a bad day forget it. So this doesn't sound do-able for me. But! I was drooling over the CMP online catalog and noticed in the ordering information it didn't say anything about a FFL. If I understand it correctly, I could fill out an order form and send copies of my gun club membership and a copy of my CCW along with a check or credit card numbers and my rifle would come in the mail. Am I reading and understanding this right or are my pain meds talking to me again? I know it would be much better to go handle the rifle before purchase but we do what we can.

I believe you understood it right.  You can order from the CMP and they will ship directly to you, no FFL needed.

UPS drives up and puts a long cardboard box on your front porch. Technically, they're supposed to get an adult signature, but often as not they don't bother.

So my CCW is proof of a club membership? YAY!

If so, I think this might be a lot of fun.  I'll have to take a look at the schedule a little closer to go-time, but it sounds like a good way to meet some like-minded individuals and spend a Saturday.

EDIT: Oh, will there be some Garand nuts going to help me pick out a beauty?  20 dollar bus fare is a pretty cheap consulting fee

Might want to read that again. It looks like your CCW will take care of the "Marksmanship or other Firearms Related Activity" requirement. You are still going to need to be a member of a club.

Here is my question..........Would a first time CMP purchaser be able to pick out a rifle and go home with it that day? Or will it have to be shipped to me at a later date?

Yep, take your gun and go home.

We're just waiting for CMP to ok the 19th..they'd originally agreed to the 26th but since there seems to be another gunny event that day, thought it might be good to try a different day. Hopefully will know today.

You'll be lucky if there are more than a handful of beat to hell service grade Garands from which to choose.

When I went to the north store in October when the Special Grades went on sale, the pickins were mighty slim then.  Unless Orest has magically uncovered a cache of Garands, I think some of you might be disappointed.

Might want to post over on the odcmp.com forums, north store sub-forum to see what they have.

I don't think the bus driver would appreciate me filling four seat rows with dirty old ammo crates, so I'll have to pass on the bus ride and just take my truck.

Oh and 7Mary3 if this is a regular tour bus, they have big cargo holds in the bottom for stuff, lots and lots of stuff.

I'd be interested in meeting the bus somewhere, too (I'm in Canton, but can never seem to make it down to CMP).
The newest Garand Collectors Assoc. magazine has a visit to CMP's Anniston,Ala. headquarters. Huge supplies of Greek Garands, millions of rounds of ammo.I imagine that the northern store has plenty of goodies, too. I really don't need another Garand, but I should get a couple of cases of 30-06 while it is still available. Yes,I'm interested in going.

What does one expect to pay for a Garand throught the CMP? If it's within my budget, I may be in for the ride.

ETA, nevermind, found it on the site. I could probably afford a Service Grade SA.... are they garaunteed to have them in stock?

I thought you were trying for the 19th?  26th is a bad day for me, I think everything in the world is going on that day.

Seems they have some rifles, but it looks like Service Grades are not in the North Store.

MCRGO is also recognized as an affilated org. and if you need prof of marksmanship training just go to a state range and save the sticker they give you. My friend and I went to the north store a couple of years ago and got garands and ammo. All the rifles have tags showing the erosion measurment and the had a serial # list so you could tell what year the receiver was made. All the people were very friendly and helpful. You can look the guns over but no disassembly is allowed. We took a .30 cal bullet (bullet only not cartdrige) to get an idea on muzell wear and that helped. There were a lot to choose from when we went. I heard the m1 carbine sales were a mad house.
