For those in the know, I have a few questions.

1. How long does Macomb County generally take to push a CCW application through to approval?

2. Are references actually called?

3. What happens at the gun board? What questions?

Mine took 6 weeks.

2. Are references actually called?
No, neither were called.

3. What happens at the gun board? What questions?
The gun board askes you basically the same questions as are what on the application. They already know the answers. Dont lie. If you made it that far, your pretty much approved.

Thanks.

So they're just going to ask if I have been convicted of a felony, have a mental illness, etc.?

I at least expected something like, "Why do you want to carry?"

Asking me things I've already written down and they've checked with my records seems like an awful waste of salary.

They will ask you that. I simply replied "personal protection" and it was on to the next question.

If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about. I was in and out of there in ~20 minutes, permit laminated and in hand.

I was kinda nervous going in because I expected a barrage of questions to answer in order to justify a need for a permit. It wasn't like that at all.

it was pretty simple.

Yep, you go into a room with 30 people or so, answer a few basic questions and walk out with your new permit. They will have a personal jacket on you, flip through it and ask questions if anything raises a flag. For me it was a misdemeanor Attempted Dragracing charge that piqued his attention... He mumbled something about it not being a disqualifier while the guy from MSP winked at me.

I think they have loosened up a bit with CCW's in the state, even Detroit is a breeze these days. Macomb took 93 days on my initial permit, Wayne Co. took 6 weeks, where it was about a year when I got my permit in Macomb.

If they ask why you want one tell them the voices in your head say its a good idea.

Post the YouTube link.

Seriously they are normally pretty laid back and straight forward.

So, do you actually have to appear before the board, or is that an optional step?  I haven't been able to find any information about that online and it was never mentioned to me in the class that I took.

In Macomb County you have to appear before the board.

Other counties vary. I believe Oakland county just mails the permit to you when its approved. Dont quote me on it though. Someone from there can probably chime in.

Thanks, I actually live in Kalamazoo Co.  I just didn't read anywhere in the application packet that you were required to appear before the board (which might be problematic for me as I go to school in Hillsdale County).

In Oakland county you can be asked to appear before the board.  I got mine in the mail.  No drag racing charges yet.  Raffi

Thanks, guys.

I figured it'd be pretty simple. I just didn't want to get caught off guard. Like stupid interview questions, "If you had to pick one word to describe you, what would it be?"

No, I wouldn't expect that question, just wondered if they had the CCW equivalent of stupid, stumping questions.

I got into some trouble 17-18 years ago when I was a kid. No felonies, just misdemeanors. Do you think that stuff will come up before the board and be a disqualifier?

Depends on what they misdemeanors were. When you go the the po-po station to get the application packet, there will be a list of disqualifying offenses, and the elimination periods that follow said offenses. I think Drunk Driving is an 8 year exclusion for example..

None of them are listed in the time frames listed. I should be good to go then, right?

I would think so.

The board will have record of your prior offenses.
Basically it works like this, If you get a letter to appear, you have already been approved.
Your track record from trouble until now will have an impact on their decision if you haven't kept yourself maintained as an individual fit to possess and carry a firearm or an upstanding citizen
When they ask about your prior arrests, tell them, explain what happened and how you have changed your way of life to become a good citizen.
It works just as they say it does,
Unless they have a good reason to deny you for a CPL, they have to issue one to you.

Mine took about 4 weeks to be processed, a friend of  mine took nearly the whole 90 days.
Questions were brief and straightforward, just as your answers should be. I was nervous going in, but once you get in, the enviornment totally changes and I became very comfortable.
Tell them it is your right to be able to protect yourself and your family members from imminent danger.

Fixed it for you. The permits are no longer discretionary-they have to have a legitimate reason to deny you-either you are black and white qualified or you aren't.

Ok, now I need to find a class that goes beyond the initial CCW class that anyone can pass.

Something with advanced shooting instruction, drawing, shooting while moving, and other defensive tactics.

Where's the place in Michigan for that? Preferably within the SE MI area.

Lotta places around these days.. visit any gunshop and either they will have classes or there will be flyers on the wall for CCW instruction.

Well, I checked my online status and everything has gone through and notes that a letter will be sent to me to appear before the gun board on the 25th.

So I have to wait longer for my gun board meeting than it actually took for the application to go through. Tis a shame, because I was looking to buy an M&P and S&W has a rebate and 2 free mags deal going on that ends the 31st. I was hoping I could have used my permit instead of getting a purchase permit.

To the person who emailed me asking about the website to check your CPL status...

https://macombvitals.macombcountymi.gov/ccw.php

As you can see, the site is for Macomb County. Your county might have it too, though.

Username is your first and last name.
Password is your birthdate (mm/dd/yyyy) and the last three digits of your Driver's License.

Thanks for the info, I tried searching for Wayne County but I don't think we have a site with the CCW status available.

Does anyone know if they give you the license right at the Macomb County Gunboard, or do they mail it later?

Just wondering because I'm likely getting an M&P and have to do so before the 31st in order to get free mags and a rebate. Need to know whether I'll have the CCW in time, or if I'll have to get a purchase permit.

You walk out with it in both Macomb and Wayne Counties. Dunno about other jurisdictions.

They will be mailing you a plain white envelope telling you that you have been approved or denied and when to come down for your permit. Look for it in the mail-I almost threw mine out with junkmail.

Is going in front of the gun board standard procedure for a michigan CPL?  I just started a new job and don't get to use time off for 3 months so showing up during the week to a board meeting wouldn't cut it for me.

Thanks.

I've already gotten the letter (plus checking online status), but it only says the time and date not whether I'm approved or not. However, I have to be since I meet all qualifications.

Depends on your county. See if you can find your county's CCW information website and it should say. In Macomb you have to go before the board.

If you can't take time off yet and your county requires you to come before the gun board, you should probably wait until you can take off. Because the letter I got says if I do not make the meeting without a valid reason it's grounds for denial.
