Hello all,

I am about a month away from moving to the great state of Michigan to start a new job in the Detroit area.

I am interested in getting my MI CCW. I read the basic info on parking.org, but wasn't sure about what kind of "class or training" I need. I am a NRA instructor,  but I haven't taken a class in the past 30 days. Do I need to take a specific MI class?

Do handguns need to be registered with the police in MI?

Thanks.

Handguns do need to be registered with the police in your city. \

For CCW I 'm not to sure but If you already have one for the state you live in the procedure most likely will be different then if you didn't have one.

There's a six month waiting period for new residents.

Thanks, that is a big help.

I still don't understand the registration crap, or "safety inspection" as it is called. Do you just go to your local Police Department and say "I've got guns!" and they enter them into a data base and you get a card? It seems crazy, and I didn't read anywhere that it was legally required, just more of a good faith thing.

I believe that you must physically present them to the Police dept. Depending where in the Detroit area you are located it can be a pain in the ass to do this. The Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county area is considered "liberal territory". Depending on what "burg" you live in will determine the problems that you have with handguns. If you live in the out state areas ususally its not a problem.

If you're moving from another state and want to bring your guns with you, don't they have to be sent to an FFL first and then 'transferred' back to you?

No.

Then how do you register any hanguns you bring with you?

Doesn't the PD need some type of paperwork on them?

As I understand it you must register them using the standard process even though you already have posession of the pistol (go to the sheriff, get the permit to purchase, and come back later with pistol you already have) ... just checked the michigan.gov website, can't find a given length of time you have to complete this task for newcomers who just moved in.

I don't have time to read through the  172 page compilation of firearm laws but it should be in there.

If I am wrong, please let me know.

When I moved back from Florida, I took my handgun down to the Sheriff's office and they gave me an "inspection card" right then and there.  No 3 part purchase permit was required.

The hangun safety inspection is just a loop hole for the state to break the law and register your hangun.
