Hey guys,

The wife and I just purchased some property up north.  I'm interested in the general direction the winds blow up there as far as CCW and class III goes.  More specifically Iron County.  (Home of Larry's Saw & Gun...yea!!!)

Right now I'm a prisoner of IL and we're weighing the pro/cons of residency.  Summer home at first, but depeding on how laws go here, we might become permanent residents.

Thanks.

You might want to try here........www.mgouc.com/phpBB2/index.php

Edited to add that MI is a shall issue state for CCW. Just jump through the hoops and you will get the permit.

As far as class 3 goes.......fat chance unless you have a C&R FFL and want to buy a C&R machine gun. Even then, you would still need to get your paperwork signed off. In the UP I would think your chances would be improved over those of us down here in the big city. Modern class 3 is forbidden.

For CCW class, Bob Black. He's from Crystal Falls I believe. I'll post more info when I can find it. Like Lumpy223 said, ask and you shall receive.(jump, spot, jump) Where did you buy? I'm in Iron Mountain.

We bought right along the Brule south of Iron River.  I have been hunting in the Stevens Lake, WI area for years.  My son and I stumbled on the land during WI deer season in November.  For once, I was in the right place at the right time.

Our plan is to build a log home and have a place to enjoy with our kids and grandkids.  I'd love to just move up, but the logistics of it right now make it difficult.

Crystal Falls is just up the road. Sounds good.  Now I need to figure out a way to claim residency so I can apply.  I know that MI has "part time residency" and a "part year residency" tax form.  I'll work on that end.

We're really excited about this.  We have been looking for years as far south as TN and all through No. WI.  You're a lucky man to call such a beautiful area of the country home.

Oh, BTW, know any local log home builders?

Jim

gunnutt, I'm in the process of getting contact info for the best log home builder in the area. I haven't seen his log work, but I have seen some of his remodelling and it is first rate.

I hope to meet you soon.

Small world.

I got the name of a builder from the realtor we're working with in Crystal Falls.  This guys name is Jeremiah Schoville.  I've sent him a few primary e-mails, but we want to go through a few season changes before we decide exactly where to build.  The property has quite a varied topography, and we just aren't quite sure where to put it yet.  Not only that, but I want to make sure the patio door faces the deer trail. :)

If it wouldn't be too rude, could I convince you toss the name of the guy you're working with?

Were bringing the troops up during their spring break here at the end of the month.  Too cold to camp yet (for the wife and kiddles at least!!) but SkiBrule should have a spot or two open.

Jim

BTW ever been to Larry's there south of Gaastra on 139?  I took my oldest there for the first time in November.

A store full of chainsaws and guns.....tru;y a temple of testosterone.

Several people in the more rural counties of Michigan get around the no class three law by giving a suitable donation to the county sheriff.
He then gives special creds. They already make some in Michigan that say "No arrest power and may only carry firearms in uniform" because under state law either court officers or deps have to seize all civil property, so the sheriff just gives those out creds to his donors and they use that and letterhead to buy full auto.
The problem is that you have to stay in good with each sheriff as they get elected.

IM sent

No I haven't been to Larry's yet, but I'll look it up soon. I drove by the place 2 years ago when we did a spring trout fishing trip. We floated from M73 to M189 (55 & 139 in WI). Had a great time and caught a few fish. We went to Sylvania Wilderness Area last year and had a great time there as well. If you must catch fish in order to have a good time, I recommend Sylvania in June. We just about had to beat them off with our paddles.

If you plan on building near the river, be sure of the regulations concerning set back and so on. With record snow fall last year in the northern and western UP, the rivers saw a lot of flooding. This may not be a problem in your area, just a heads up.

When you're in the area, give me a call and we'll try to meet. I'm in the book.

Good Luck, Fred

Fred,

Sorry... I've been out of town with my job.  You say "sent IM".  If I could figure out how to get it, I'd be happy!!  I'm just a little computer illiterate.

Not directly on the water, so setback isn't a concern.  We did speak to the heath commissioner in Iron County with just that concern before we signed.

If I can't retrive the IM, I'll adjust my profile to list my e-mail for a couple of days.
