Coming down in July to check out for possible relocatation will be in Nashville area. Give me some pro's / con's about your state. I heard no state income tax...if that's true that is awesome. I'm looking to get out of Illinois, and head south away from Chicago. Right now I'm tossed up between Texas and Tennesee. I want to hear the Tennesee Hive's good and bad.  It looks like your laws/beliefs may be more in line with mine then Illinois.

Thanks,

Dave

Having lived and worked in the Chicago area I believe you will like Texas better.

Yep...no state income tax except for capital gains.

Sales tax sucks @ 9.25%.

I've lived in TX just north of Dallas and in TN. I prefer having seasons in TN as opposed to either hot as hell then a month of ice and back to hot as hell. But if you like boating, you can do that almost year round in TX.

Don't get me wrong, I love TX and would not hesitate to move back if I had to. It has great hunting and what I think is better laws concerning rights of victims and property owners. They don't mess around down there.

If you like mountains there really isn't a choice. Go TN. Same with seeing leaves actually change color instead of just die. Neither has state income tax. Things here are improving since there has been a transition of the state becoming more and more conservative. TN used to be a democrat state. The big cities still are just like everywhere else.

You would probably have to give us a better idea of what you like to do so we can better compare if the area is suited for that. It sounds like you have a choice so finding work may not be that big of a deal but I feel like TX has more job opportunities.

Of course I moved back to TN after my time in TX. Not because I had to, but because I wanted to. So I guess that should tell you where my heart is.

As others have said  - No state income tax except on Capital Gains - Fairly high sales tax between 9-10% depending on which county you are in.

Most of the state is conservative except the urban areas. Unlike IL the urban areas are not large enough to control the state. We currently have a Republican Governor and a Republican super majority in the state house and senate. They still pass some BS laws and we still need to fix some previous laws. Cost of living varies greatly. Rural areas are usually very low while non-ghetto urban areas are higher. property taxes are relatively low compared to other places I have lived.

I was born and raised in TN but have lived in Vermont, Florida, New York and New Jersey. In general TN is better l  than all but Florida, which is comparable. As gun laws go: our carry permit allow open or concealed carry; an 8 hour class is required to get your carry permit; Class 3 is fine; TN has a castle doctrine type law; businesses have to use state mandated language if they post no carry signage. Places to shoot can be hard to come by in some areas unless you have access to private land but get to know some locals and they can open up access to private land to shoot on.  Plenty of gun shops.  If you hunt/fish, the regulations are reasonable and there is public land scattered across the state.

West Tennessee is flat with a lot of agriculture. Memphis is the big city in the region. A few smaller cities like Jackson but mostly small agriculture based towns.

Middle Tennessee is rolling hills with a mix of urban and rural area. Nashville is here as well as smaller satellite cities like Franklin, Clarksville,  Columbia, Gallatiin, and others. Still plenty of rural area but not as much row crop agriculture, more livestock agriculture.

East Tennessee is mountains. Knoxville and Chattanooga are larger cities with the Tri-Cities area starting to expand again. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are located here next to Smokey Mountains National Park. A lot of public land due to Cherokee National Forest. Very little agriculture due to terrain.

Memphis is rough and I generally avoid it like the plague. Some people love it but it usually ranks as one of the most dangerous cities in America. Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga all have rough areas but these areas can be avoided. The city government in all four cities are controlled by Democrats.

Thanks for the information guys this is good stuff that I wasn't aware of. A little more about me is that I work in the auto/diesel industry as a technician and engineer.I can move wherever as long as I'm close to an airport.  However I will get tired of flying to work at some point in my life and would like to settle down in state. Any idea how the automotive/transportation industry is down there? Right now I'm paying over 5K in property taxes and getting hit for 5% a paycheck for state income tax plus 8.25-10% sales tax. Not to mention constant anti gunner threats, I feel guilty until proven innocent up here. So salary at this point I'd go lower just to get out of this godforsaken state. The only thing that has been keeping me here is family (not wife/kids, but mom and dad)

Likes ;
Shooting/archery( obviously )
Hiking/Camping
Golfing a little bit
Dog Park/rec areas would be nice
Working on/building cars
Low property taxes

Property taxes will be lower. I have 1800 sq. ft. home on 1.5 acres and pay 1K.  The Nashville Airport is pretty large and serviced by all the major airlines.

Nissan North America has its corporate head quarters in Franklin, TN and a plant in Smyrna, TN. VW has a plant in Cleveland, TN. GMC has a plant in Spring Hill, TN. Cummins has a facility (research I think) outside of Cookeville, TN.
