Direct me to the NY refugee camp in your free state?

All kidding aside I am looking at relocating myself to TN with possibly a couple more refugees. Myself and another will probably be seeking to expand our tech based education a bit too.

A friend in Nashville recommended Knoxville, would the TN section of the hive be willing to comment on the quality of life in that area?

Are you willing to bring hot women and booze?  That's the ticket in.

Knoxville is a fun area (assuming you all are young and enjoy night life).  Community colleges are close for your education needs.  A decent amount of industry in the area.

Certain areas you certainly want to avoid, as goes with any bigger city, but they aren't areas you need to travel through.

UT football is an amazing time of the year... even if the team is shitty

Also don't forget about Chattanooga.  Fun city as well, not quite as big as Knoxville but close.

Knoxville's a great place. One of three cities recovered from the recession as of last fall Link.  Depending on your IT back ground, companies like Regal Cinema and Scripps Network (HGTV) are based in Knoxville.  If you land on the west end it's a short trip to Oak Ridge with ORNL, ORAU, and the "national security complex" and it's subcontractors.  ETA: TVA has a location in Knoxville, too.

Quality of life is what you make of it, I guess.  Entertainment wise there are of course bars and theaters, we're big enough to get a few "headliner" bands through the coliseum each year. The overall location is pretty convenient, I think- a few hours drive to either Nashville or Chattanooga, a 45 minute flight to Atlanta.  You can road trip over to the Carolina beaches during the summer (6-8hr drive).  These could be pros or cons depending on what you're looking for I guess.

If you are wanting technology.

Move to Nashville.

I worked for Sun Microsystems and Oracle for 4 years here in town.

Lots of tech companies are moving here due to cheaper cost of operations.

There are rules you must obey if moving to TN from the non-free states.

1. We don't care how you did things up there. If it was better, you wouldn't be moving here.
2. Our driving is just fine. Any comments to the contrary will not make your move easier.
3. It is called a "turn signal", not a "turn request". If and when we use it keep in mind that we are not asking for your permission, we are informing you of our decision.
4. Tennessee does not have gun registration, but we do enforce a two gun per person minimum. If you do not already have two guns, please plan on visiting one of our gun shops as soon as you become a resident.
5. Do not insult our mannerism or linguistic nuances. It is all just a part of our charm.
6. Wearing a "I love NY" shirt or hat is grounds for insult, ridicule, or being asked to leave an establishment.
7. We already know that the Titans suck, we don't need you to remind us.
8. We already know that the Vols have sucked (recently), we don't need you to remind us.
9. Any reference to college football that does not involve an SEC team will result in ridicule and being asked to leave.
10. If someone says "Well aren't you precious" or "Bless your little heart" they are questioning your cognitive abilities and suggesting that whatever you did or said was proof of mental deficiencies.

Oh, and if your friend that lives in Nashville suggested you move to Knoxville I have to wonder how good of a friend he or she is. Everyone knows Nashville > Knoxville

Well he suggested it based on the desire to continue my/our educations first and foremost, other than that I don't care where in the state I end up after school I go where the employment opportunities are

In that case, welcome to Tennessee!

When considering schools, don't forget Vanderbilt.

Having been to various places in New York I have to wonder how y'all could have let New York City get so screwed up.  I thought that until I did gun shows a few years ago in Memphis.  I see the relationship.  Liberal Democraps have a tendency to screw up anything they touch no matter the location.

You must also realize most of us 'NATIVES' were at least 18 years old before we found out damm and yankee were two seperate words.

1.  Yankee is one who comes down and goes back up.

2.  Damm Yankee is one that comes down and stays.

3.  'G' Damm Yankee is one that comes down and stays and votes Democrap!, or in my famlies case allows a son in law from the north to take our little 'Princess' up North!

BTW if you check you will find out that most of the production of 'Red Man' chewing tobacco is not sold down south, but goes mainly to upper state New York!  That was a major surprise to me.  Sort of like the most Confederate Battle flags I have ever saw were flown outside homes just outside Chicago than are ever flown down here.

Nashville has a big health care industry. There are also automotive plants in the area. The pay is lower than NY, but the cost of living is drastically lower. Leave all "Nanny State" ideas at the State line. We don't have a state income tax "for the children" and we ain't gettin' one. Even if you don't like sports, you have to be able to at least keep up with an SEC football conversation. They mostly revolve around whose ass got kicked by an SEC team that week. Never forget, Tennessee is the patron state of shootin' stuff. Do your best to blend in and not try to do it like y'all did it up nawth. Things are a bit slower down here. Be patient. Don't honk at people in traffic. Whatever you do, don't pull over with someone that you honk at in traffic. It will not end well. Don't be offended if an oncoming driver raises one finger off the wheel at you. It hopefully isn't the middle one. It's used to say hi. And lastly... there are over 350,000 other Yankees that tried to change the South still buried in our soil. Like I said before, blend in.

There are four technology trade schools in Knoxville last I checked.  Maryville is just down the road and is growing too, might want to check there.  As others have said, humble yo'self before you come down here.

I live and work in the county just south of Nashville and It is fantastic in most ways. Chattanooga would be my second pick and Knoxville my Third. I had rather take a hot poker in the eye than live in Memphis. The only problems I see with the actual city of Nashville are  there is quite a bit of ghetto, if it is not ghetto it is full of hipsters, if it is neither of those it is pricey( probably not an issue coming from NY) if you are looking into Davidson county check out Old hickory, crieve hall, sylvan park, nippers corner, and joelton. I highly recommend Williamson county which includes the cities of brentwood, franklin, spring hill, nolensville and a few others, and there is  quite a bit of country.

I escaped NY (Syracuse) back in '98 and haven't regretted it.  Tennessee is a beautiful state and a lot like rural NY in many ways.  The people are very friendly here.

Get out while you can and don't look back!

Roger, that! I am setting up shop in my retirement here. best place going. Believe me.

Yours truly spent the first 65 years of his life "up North" (Ohio), which has turned into a manure pit. I used to go to NYC on bidness many times; don't know how people can stand THAT place. Horrible. I'd rather have my fingernails pulled out with pliers and then be tortured before I'd go back to NYC.

Big secret: TN is the real "sleeper" to re-locate to. Decent, God-fearing people, who still believe that the U.S. Constitution means something.

P.S.
Although known vaguely "up North," the Battle of Athens is well-known here in TN. Here's what Vols do with vote fraud:
