Hey guys I am wanting your input of my setup for 3 gun.  Observer helped me out alot when I shot with him, and I want some opinions on how to set my stuff up for my first match next week.  For my pistol I am going to use my XDM and have holsters for it.  my main questions are to do with my rifle and shotgun.  I need to re-zero my rifle, but want to know the best distance to use for my zero. And for my shotgun I am using my 870 and want to know what choke I should use.  I have a poly-choke in it now where I can change the choke to whatever I like so I just want yalls opinion on what to use (Improved, Modified, etc.) Also since it's my first time I am just going to get one of those shell bags to hold my shells, but what do I do with the slugs so I dont get them mixed up?  Also how far are the targets that I have to shoot slugs at? Any opinions and advice would be helpful.

I like a 50/200 zero for 55gr. It allows me to put my crosshairs centered on any target from 10 to 300 knowing the bullet should hit +/- 2". Easy math. Inside 10 you have to aim a couple inches high. This works well for the ranges and targets at MSSA. Edit: http://ar15zeroing.com/

I use a modified choke, but for MSSA improved cylinder is probably a better choice. Modified hits the plates so hard that they sometimes bounce back up which can confuse you.  Well it messes with me. I plan on going to IP.

50yd zero is perfect for what we do.

I'll leave this up to the other guys.  I just have a cylinder bore and works fine for me.  Maybe one day I'll change it out but for now, I'm happy.

We will work with you if there is a stage that requires you to switch between them.  Normally stages are something like "only 4 slugs loaded".  After those are fired we just load birdshot next.  Not always but worst case is you can use my shell caddy.

Also how far are the targets that I have to shoot slugs at?
Sometimes under 20, sometimes 30yd.  Only once have we done a 50yd gong that I can remember.

So I should try Improved for my shotgun and have a 50 yard zero?

I would start with that.

As far as mixing up slugs, just make sure you have different color shells. When the course of fire is mixed shot and slug, remember to load starting with the cartridge that will be the last shot.

Yeah you should be good with that setup.  If a stage uses slugs and shot they can usually be shot seperate.  In other words you can shoot all the slugs or all the birdshot together.  I can't ever remember a mixed reload from your belt at MSSA.  Like GoTigers said make sure you load your shotgun in the correct order for mixed stages.  A slug on steel is very costly.

I prefer a 100 yard zero myself. With .223/5.56 there might not be much difference between 50 & 100 yard zeros. But I can hold much easier for up close shooting than I can on 100 yard shots.

As for your slugs, all the matches I've been to where we used slugs, the stage was a slug-only stage.

I would use an IC choke myself but that's just me, I dare to be different.

MSSA may not mix slug and shot between each other, but they do have stages with both. As Urikagold said, they usually try to seperate the two cartridges. I think it was the Henry county match that actually mixed the 2, so load order was important.

I would skip getting the shell bag.  In the stages where you could use it, they will usually let you just put a box of shells on the table.

Start looking around for the shell-holder that you are interested in getting.

I picked up a shotshell holder from 3 gun stuff.  Chris is a good dude.  If not, depending on your team, people will let you borrow what you need.

I have 2 extra 4 shell holders that can I can lend out, but like Scout said it depends on what squad you are on.  He was all set for a ride in the self propelled 3 gun wagon and ended up getting squadded on another squad.  Sorry Scout, maybe this time.

Just look for one of the bolt logos on our rigs and say hey.  We will tag you up with someone who has equipment you can use and link yall together in a squad.
