| I am in upper east TN. I have come to the conclusion that I don't know everything about personal defense shooting. Take me to a range, and I am good to go. In real life situations, who knows. I am looking for a class that I can take that would improve these skills. |
| One suggestion I have is to look around your local ranges and see what you find. A lot of local ranges offer classes that will be cheaper and less time consuming than some of the bigger schools (not knocking them, just saying) and will give you some good basics to work on. Group of us in Memphis (opposite end of the state, I know) did this at one of the local ranges here- $100 one day class and I think we all learned a bit and had a great time doing it. |

FWIW, Louis Awerbuck offers a class in Sevierville most years, though he's not yet scheduled his 2011 visit. Lou is top-notch and driven more by results than doctrine.
Tactical Response in Camden (midstate, though) is very good. I only know of one school up your way (in Greeneville) and honestly could not recommend it. I'll refrain from naming it, but I believe it's the only one there. The IDPA matches at this facility are fine, but the classes are, um...different. The chief instructor told me in all seriousness (during a muzzle blast drill which freaked some students out a bit) that if he really trusts the class, he runs a live fire drill where half go downrange and stand at alternate targets, while the other half shoot in between them...so that all get a feel for what it's like to take incoming
I haven't been back for further "instruction" there. FoF training with airsoft or even simunitions is one thing, but sending people downrange of live fire from someone you met a couple hours ago? None for me, thanks. |
