It's not TDOT (TN Dept of Transportation); they're they guys who build the roads, and in certain areas, help you if your car breaks down or you have a wreck.
It's TDOS (TN Dept of Safety)––driver's licenses, HCPs, Highway Patrol, etc. And no, they'll just make a copy. You get your original back. (and, FWIW, TN does not have a DMV! It's TDOS...if you're gonna live here, learn to speak the language!)
