I know this has been covered before, but I just want some claification. 1.Upon HCP expiration can you still carry for 6 months before renewal? 2. If you have the papers saying you renewed but have yet to recieve new permit can you carry until it arrives or just for up to 6 months? Thanks. |

It's my understading that once your permit expires, and if you have not applied for renewal, you are no longer legal to carry. The time allowed beyond that point only applies to whether or not your have to start over on the application process (take the class, again) or renew your old permit.
The papers that show you have applied for renewal, apparently do count as a temporary extension on your permit, since the state is running so far behind on processing the renewals. |

No. If your permit expires before you renew it, you may renew it within 6 months (for the $50 renewal fee) without having to start the process from scratch, including fingerprints, class, etc. Under these circumstances, however, you may not carry after expiration while awaiting receipt of your renewal. 2. If you renew timely (i.e., before expiration), you will retain your old permit, and be given a receipt (likely an 8.5"x11" piece of paper) demonstrating that you have done so. You then must carry your expired permit and the receipt until you receive your new permit. There's no time limit on how long this may be...though they're required by statute to issue a renewal in 90 days (which may take a phone call or more to make happen!). Yeah, it's a pain to fold up a sheet of typing paper & carry it in your wallet, but I've done it. Better that than being unable to carry legally. See TCA 39-17-1351 at Michie for the text of the law. You'll have to drill down to the specific subsection. David |

Thanks David, I renewed after expiration (maybe a week) but have yet to get my new permit......So it is ok to carry (with renewal paperwork) until it gets here with no time limit? ETA: I just read your response more carefully.....So pretty much I'm stuck until it arrives Oh well, I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6

Looks like you figured it out: renew after expiration, no legal carry until the new card arrives.
Just went through that with a friend at work. She thought her permit expired in Dec, when it really expired in Nov. She rarely carries anyway, but knows she can't right now. I'm watching to see how long her renewal takes, too. David |
