| Sorry for asking this question, but I searched first and didn't find anything. I recently changed my residency from Louisiana to TN and while in Louisiana I had both a LA CCW and Florida out of state permit. When I moved I sent my LA CCW back in so it wouldn't be revoked (I will probably move back one day) and figured that because TN had reciprocity with Florida that I would be fine here. My question is, is my Florida out of state permit good here with a TN I.D.? If it is not hopefully I can get a TN CCW for just the renewal fee without a copy of my Louisiana one. Thanks for the help. |

now why did you surrender your la. permit? you can have permits from multiple states. i moved here from arizona 2 years ago and have an az permit and one from utah .i still have both plus the az permit was good to get the tn. permit as a renewal. the main reason i am keeping all three is if in the event that i travel i am covered for reciprocity with as many states as possible. so get your la. permit back if you can. also you have to get your tn permit pretty quick because as a resident of tn. the out of state permits are not valid in tn after a period of time. if you cant get your la. permit for some reason you are going to have to take the ccw class and pay the full amount as the florida is not good enough for tennessee. make sense? good luck.

| The reason Florida offers a CCW permit is because a lot of its part time residents live in states like NY or California who cant get one or other states who dont have reciprocity with Florida. Florida wants to have no reason for anybody to be happy with the state so they offer a CCW for out of staters who have no reciprocity with Florida. Because TN has reciprocity with Florida. I would assume , especially since you moved that both your LA and FL permits are now void. I would send them back shred them or keep them in case you move back. I would assume if you got pulled over, pulled out your TN license with a LA permit, you may be in some kind of trouble. Same if you had a TN DL and a FL CCW permit. I would not ever use your LA or FL CCW unless you move back to LA and they arent expired. I have heard of a lot of people saying they had permits from several states. But like TN, if you move you only have so many months to have it changed or its void. |
| Sorry it took a while to respond, I haven't been on. As for the questions, I turned in my LA permit because when you move out of state it is revoked and because I plan on moving back and didn't want to be hassled when getting a new one I returned it so technically mine was never revoked. My Florida out of state permit is still valid however because I filled out a change of address form, so anywhere that has reciprocity with FL out of state permit holders it still works. Really what I am getting at is TN doesn't address the difference between FL out of state permits and FL resident permits, it just says that they accept FL permits. I guess I will just call to see if there is anything in the law about out of state permits. I appreciate the help. |

Once becomming a resident of Tennessee (and having a permit from another State) you have 6 months to get a Tennessee permit. See TCA 39-17-1351(r)(3)(B)
If you work in Tennessee for atleast 6 months and live in another State that doesn't have reciprocity with TN you still have to get a Tennessee permit. See TCA 39-17-1351(r)(3)(C)(i) |
