Hello all, this is my first post.  I am new to the gun world although i love it.

I will soon be buying an ar-15 and i ran into something that im unsure about.

I have a pickup truck.  i plan on buying a gun, and a decent ammount of ammo at the same time.  i know im soposed to put the gun "in the trunk" and the ammo up front, however in a pickup without a cover, im not sure what to do since obvously i cant have a gun slideing arround in the back of my pickup.

also, since this will be my first gun ever purchased, what should i expect?  any legal issues i should know about?  things to look for/avoid?

forgive me if this is covered somewhere, i did try to find the answer useing "google" but was unable to reach any concrete answer.  Thank you for your paitence.

Do you have a carry permit? If so you can even have a loaded magazine in the rifle, so long as there isn't a round in the chamber. If you don't have a carry permit, put the rifle in the back seat or behind the front seats for a standard cab and put the ammo up front.

Welcome. The safest way to be sure in TN is to have a carry permit especially for long arms. In my humble opinion it really cuts down on the gray areas about separating your ammo.

If I didn't have a permit I would get a lockable toolbox/ammobox and lock it up just to be sure. If you had a hard case for the AR you could lock it up too, but if it were me I would

want one of them locked and the AR out of sight.

ETA: There is a wealth of info on this site, stay tuned.

saddly i do not have a carry permit simply because i havnt felt the need to... well carry, however in the past few nights, ive read a lot of stuff, law related, and found that my safety is really down to Police, and myself.  so that being said, i think i will get a carry permit.

thanks for the info, i feel a bit better.  my truck really doesnt have a back seat, in fact, i bairly have room for a flashlight behind any of my and my passanger seat.

looks like a locking ammo case/gun case is in my near future.

I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Unfortunately a certain degree of paranoia is necessary these days. There are crazy people willing to kill you for anything, from cutting them off in traffic to needing their next meth fix. I'm trying to figure out the best way to secure a rifle in my truck so that it doesn't get stolen, but yet is still easy to access if I need it.

In short, get your permit!

The handgun carry class is pretty much just a bare bones basic class to get you by, if I were in your situation and was completley new to shooting

I would definently look into a class given by a certified instructor once I did get my permit. There is a lot to consider in choosing a semi auto rifle

worth over a thousand dollars too, the big one is having it stolen out of your truck but there are other concerns and many stories on here to illustrate

them. I might even look at getting a more inexpensive handgun to learn on since with a good holster you can really carry it and classes are probably

more common in your area. Handguns are easier to protect (hide) in your house too if you don't have a safe. Just something I would consider if I

was in your shoes.

Ok to continue on this theme. I am a Kentucky resident and live on FT Campbell. I have been shooting 3 gun matches in Tennessee. I have soft cases for my rifle and shotgun and transport pistols in the padded outside pockets of my range bag. All of these are zippered and although I can put a small lock on the zippers, I hardly consider these secure.

The first match I shot at I drove my wife's SUV with all guns and ammo in the back. Most of the ammo was pre-loaded in the mags. Pistol mags were in the elastic loops in the range bag with the pistols and the AR mags were in the outside pockets of the rifle case. All shotgun ammo and extra rifle and pistol ammo were in the main compartment of the range bag. I was informed after the match that this may not be fully legal to transport in this manner.

At the second match I drove my crew cab pick-up with open, uncovered bed) Since it was looking like rain I had everything in the back seat area of the cab. I had all ammo (some in mags) in an ammo can with a small pad lock on it on the floor in front of the back seat, and the rifle and shotguns were in their soft bags. The pistol was in the range bag outer pocket. I put small locks on all zippers where firearms were contained.

From what I read in this thread, this may not be legal either as the ammo (although locked in a separate container) needs to be in a different part of the vehicle.

I have to be a Kentucky resident for 6 months before I can apply for my permit and have only been here since June. It is top priority once December comes though.

Until then, what is the best way for me to transport in my pick-up in TN short of buying a tool box or cover for the bed?

When I was in TX I could have a loaded pistol in the passenger compartment as long as it was in the glove compartment or console or similar. Rifles and shotguns can be carried loaded anywhere in the passenger compartment. Why does this have to be so complicated?  "Shall not be infringed" ring any bells?

I have concidered holding off on the ar15 till i got my carry permet, however the main reason i wanted to start collecting guns in the first place was the ar and the ak.  i understand the cost involved with getting started, and the risk of getting it stolen.  however it looks like buying a pistol and getting the lisence first is almost going to be a requirement.

Nah, it's not a requirement at all, unless you want to carry a loaded AK or AR in your vehicle.  Lock the ammo in the glove box or put it in the bed and keep the rifle in the cab.

I wouldn't sweat it. I just kept mine as separated as possible in my extended cab truck and it wasn't in my vehicle unless I was headed to the range or going hunting. I don't think our congress critters are going to be able to ban EBRs anytime soon. Just buy one, you won't regret it, unless you buy a crappy one.

lol, i dont think im going to be buying crap.  if im going to put a grand down on a gun, i think id put 1.2-1.5k down instead to get a good gun.

thing is, my glovebox doesnt lock, in fact, its broken, and i have a shortbed truck.  so, to be honest, that hurts a little.

As I understand the law, having the ammo locked in a separate container from the firearms would be legal, even if the cases are in the same part of the vehicle, but you would be in violation for having some of the ammo in mags (allowed with a carry permit, but not allowed without the permit).

For several years, I drove a small hatchback, so there was no 'separate area of the vehicle'.  The guns went in padlocked hardcases, and all ammo went in ammo cans, to keep them separated.

Politicians around here seem to be bit overly concerned about the issue of someone illegally hunting from their vehicle.  A couple of decades or so ago, there was a lot of press coverage of a TWRA program that used a stuffed/mounted deer as bait to catch people shooting at it from a country road.

Don't let me discourage you then, just lock the ammo up in a toolbox and keep the AR out of sight. I get kind of jumpy when it comes to legal matters like this because my mind tends to drift toward the worst case scenario. Get the AR.

Glad you can chunk down that kind of money for a new AR, but why not build your own?

Parts are becoming more readily available for a decent price. You can actually find some great priced deals if you look, and ponce when you find them. Because there are others doing the same and they will have it if you wait to long.

I would say you could build a good AR for around $600-$800 (Basic model). Then you can add the accessories later as you go.

It may seem a little intimidating to build one at first, but is actually fairly simple.

There are plenty of folks on here to ask questions of, links for easy to follow directions, and even some videos showing step by step.

Also the money you save, you could go to a junk yard and get a new glove box for your truck, and then to Lowes, and get a "Tuff Box" for less than $50 bucks.

Also look on craigslist for a "Tool Box for less than $150. Nice to keep stuff in when you have more than one person in the truck.
