I know this topic is normaly in the SF but it's a local question. My MIL told me last night she saw a bit on the news where metro council had an upcoming meeting to discuss allowing chickens in Metro area. Anyone know anything about this? I've read the codes that are out there and from what I can see the neighborhood dogs are more of a PIA than my chick chicks.

Ever try selling your house when your neighbors have chickens? Nothing like a rooster crowing in the background to turn off a potential buyer while they are out looking at your house. Animal control in Nashville is a joke. Several calls about roaming dogs and nothing gets done until somebody is bit. |

From what I read, there are two bills to be considered. One will ban chickens, and other livestock, from residential areas. The other will allow chickens with some restrictions: limit on number of chickens depends on lot size, chickens not allowed in front yard, no roosters, etc.
And even when someone is bit, animal control doesn't necessarily do anything. Of course, the fact that the dog's owner is a relative of a judge, and has a 'good buddy' on the metro police force, could be factors in the lack of action in that case. |

Several calls about roaming dogs and nothing gets done until somebody is bit. 99.9999999999% of those that have chickens (esp. in the city) DON'T have a rooster. My 4 chickens tread less in the backyard than any neighbor's dogs––-cleaner and quieter. |

To me it would depend on the particular circumstances. I can't see having chickens on a quarter acre lot in a subdivision at all.
There was the story of that lady that had a pet goat over by Old Hickory Lake. She walked it on a leash like a dog and kept it in the house and everything, and brother let me tell you, she had a VERY nice house. Well the city took notice and told her to get rid of it because goats are considered livestock and are therefore strictly verboten by law. Last I heard she was fighting it but it looked like the law was winning. I just would like to add this, do you know what might happen if they allow chickens in a subdivision in Antioch? |

Well, the roosters are going away this weekened. They have gotten on my last nerve and not becuase of the crowing. If I don't open their coop until 7 they won't crow. Actually only one crows but I know if I did him in the other wood as well..
I have a quater acre lot in Antioch. Just for shits and giggles one day I pulled up google maps and was looking at satellite photos of the neighborhood. With the exception of a few yards the rest had so much junk in th back yard it was unreall. I try very hard to keep my yard looking nice. I try to keep the grass cut as best I can and keep the garden weeded so it doesn't look like a giant weed patch. Normally you can't even tell I have chickens in the back yard since I clean up after them daily. There are others in the neighborhood who have chickens as I have heard a couple of other roosters. Doesn't bother me. That doesn't mean I want to start seeing goats, cows or pigs around. Right now I have more of an issue with the neighborhood dogs shitting in my front yard than I do with a rooster at 5:30. As for animal control. You are absolutely right, they are a freaking joke. Animal control for me has become a crossman. |

The lady in the story had a huge lakefront house and no one seemed to mind, all the kids in the neighborhood loved the goat and it was one of those pygmy types. If it is already illegal to have chickens and many do, and you are not being forced to remove them because your chickens are not causing issues then what’s the problem? If they allow chickens you don't think people will try to keep fifty in their backyard? I can't slam Antioch too much because my part of town ain't any better, but I see why they don't allow chickens. My neighbor has a couple chickens and a few ducks, they don't cause problems so it doesn't get noticed but if he tried to keep too many.... |

I wouldn't want someone keeping 30 or 50 chickens in their yard. That would be a little much |

That would be a little much Under the bill that would allow chickens but impose some restrictions on them, lots that are between a quarter acre and two acres would be allowed to have up to six hens (no roosters). Smaller lots would be restricted to no more than two hens. |
