| Hello Tn. First post in any forum ever! Presently I'm stationed in Ft.Eustis Va. and am looking to settle in Tn., after 20+ years of vagabond Army life. We would like info on Bedford, Coffee, Franklin, Grudy,Hamilton, Lincoln, Marion, Moore, and Sequatchie Counties. How do the Tn. enployment services work, ie, do you have to register with them before appling anywhere? How is the job market there? Anybody know anyone who looking to sell a mini farm or house with 10+ acres? What are the laws like, for shooting on your own property(outside city limits), written and unwritten? Any 300+ ranges in those Counties? Are there many VFW in the area? I'm full of questions, and appreciate any input from everyone. Thank You. |

Well, the job market right now is like everywhere else: slow. No clue about places for sale in the 10+ acres you list. The internet WILL be your friend for finding that out, IMO. As for shooting, Hamilton Co. = Chattanooga, for the most part. Much like everywhere else, common sense comes into play when shooting on one's own property. Most neighbors are gonna have some hunting in them, so they're not gonna be anti-gun. Unless, of course they're GDyankees. Coffee Co. has Tullahoma & Winchester, two moderate sized little towns. Again, the internet will help you out there. I used to shoot 3 Gun in that area & they still shoot IDPA & IPSC there. The 3 Gun RM is taking a break, a much needed one as he did matches for several years. There's a range at Viola, primitive, but has a 300 yard line. No clue about anywhere else in that area. Not sure what you're asking about the "employment services"? You don't have to "register" with the state in order to apply to anywhere for a job. There's lots of options for living out in the country in TN. However, making a living while living out there is not too easy, IMO. BTW, it's "Grundy" Co., not "Grudy". Lincoln Co. is pretty rural, lots of farming there. Fayetteville is about the only city of any size there. Many folks drive from there to Huntsville, AL for work. Bedford Co. begins & ends with Shelbyville. Walking Horse capital of the world. Nice little town, like elsewhere their industry is being hit hard with the economy too. Tyson Chicken plant is NOT where you'd want to work.
With 20+ years, I'm assuming you're on a pension. What sort of work do you want to do to supplement it? Might want to also look at Bradley, McMinn & Polk counties, IMO. SE corner of TN, wonderful mountain views without the crowds of Gatlinburg. Oh, yes, your first post: Welcome!

I would suggest living in Marion, or Sequatchee Counties and commuting to Hamilton county. Chattanooga is really booming with development eventhough according to .gov everything sucks. VW has a new plant coming in and they supposedly have started interviews (not a 100% on that) so there is always that and its is actually one of the insurance industries hub cities with BC/BS and UNUM there.
I know people from all three counties and they all love the Valley as they call it. Also for land prices I would say that Sequatchee, McMinn, Grundy counties would probably be closest to affordable. The rest are actually getting rather expensive. Po-Po |

Well what I meant with enployment services was in Ky., say you whated to work for toyota, you had to be registered was with the Ky. human resoure center(services) and they would refer you. But you ansewed my question. As far as work after the army, well anybody have any tanks laying around, no, ok I Quarry, Forresty, Factory, Shop, I'm open to anything. Thanks so much for the info so far.

Shooting ranges in the Hamilton county area include the Chattanooga Rifle Range just north of town and the Cleveland Hunting, Rifle and Pistol Range in Bradley county south of Cleveland.
The Chattanooga range has 100, 200, and 300 yard ranges. It also has a 500 yard range that can only be used during matches. There is a waiting list to get in at this time. The Cleveland range (last I heard) has 100 and 200 yard ranges. Both are good places to shoot. You can shoot at both during matches without being a member. You can find land and "mini farms" all around this area but the closer you are to town, the more expensive it will be. firearms laws are pretty good. If you are into NFA type stuff, LEO sign offs are easy (they are required to sign the paper work if you pass the background check). Good luck, Joe |

Nissan in TN was the same way. The reason is/was that they got a slew of state tax breaks & somehow someone came up with the brilliant idea that the aps should be filtered thru the state process. No doubt to encourage "diversity". As for tanks, actually we DO have a few. The TN Military Collectors Assoc. has some toys that we'd love to play with.
There's also the option of living up around Robertson Co. & working in/on Ft. Campbell. That way you could still use your perks on base, i.e. BX & whatnot. Diesel mechanics are usually going to be in demand in most large cities, no clue about the medium ones. Of course, tractors have diesels too, so a farming-dominant area may not be a bad idea. |

Anybody have more info on Aronld AFB. and employment in southern Tn. in general? Google up a TN newspaper search for each town & peruse their want-ads, IMO. Not sure if Arnold has anything on-line or not? Arnold DOES have a helluva 1000 yard range though. |

Unfortunately I'm not a tank mechanic, but I am a Master Gunner so I can calabrate the fire control system, not work on the engines. I can do everything else though, change track, road wheels, sprockets, I'ld do another 20 if I could stay on one. Maybe I'll check with the Tn. NG and see if they have any opening maintaining Tanks. Thanks agian.

Somewhere in Alabama is a plant where they refurbish Abrams tanks for the military. anybody know what city that is in? Red Stone Arsenal? Anniston? Found it on Google. The General Dynamics plant in Anniston,Alabama is where Abrams tanks go to be rebuilt/refurbished/upgraded. Not in TN obviously, but sounds like a perfect civilian job for panzertrooper. |
