People commonly say they lost all of their guns in a tragic boating accident, which is supposed to be an excuse if the government ever comes looking for their guns to take away.

This is my understanding of the phrase, anyway.

I am not sure where the joke originated - it's old - but It's because form 4473 acts as a purchase record, and if the gubment wanted to come collect them all, in theory they would look through the records and see who has bought what. Your response to them would be "I no longer have that gun because it's at the bottom of a lake somewhere." i.e. lost in a tragic boating accident.

and if they claim it's ridiculous to expect them to believe that I had every one of my guns in that boat with me, I can simply point out that I own more than one boat.

There are bonus points awarded to those arfcom members who had their then-wife hanging onto the guns as they settled at the bottom of the lake.............

If they think it's a ridiculous  story simply inform them it's a ridiculous request and show them the pictures of when you went diving looking for them. like this.

I just keep sale records on my weapons. Pat Henry has been a VERY good buyer, with Tom Jefferson being a close second. Alex Hamilton isn't happy that I've sold those guys as many as I have, but I won't sell to him because of his politics.
