I'm not sure if I am allowed to post this here or not. Mod, delete if you must. What is the difference between the 6.8SPC and the .270 ? Can they be interchanged ? I've done searches and havn't found anything I understand. I posted this here because there are folks here that are knowledgeable and can put it in terms I understand.
Thanks.

Hi Terry!
I don't have an answer for you.

6.8 uses .221 Fireball brass cases, large rifle primers, and .270 bullets. I reload and use either 110gr FMJ or 115gr HPBT .270 bullets from Sierra in my loadings. As far as .270 rifles I am not sure, but the 6.8 I do know.

Hope this helps.

I thought the 6.8SPC was based on the .30Rem case, not the .221Fireball.

If I'm not mistaken, Remington 6.8SPC brass uses large rifle primers, but Hornady and SSA 6.8SPC brass uses small rifle primers.

Thanks Sean, I think I understand. It seems like .270 would be a good idea. Hey Jerry, cleaned out the Jeep junkpile yet ?

No the 6.8 cannot be interchanged with the .270.  The 6.8 is a cartridge that is designed for use on the AR platform.  The round is the same length of the 5.56 cartridge but is a little thicker and has a .270 sized bullet instead of a .223 sized bullet.

The 6.8 is a pretty effective hunting round for the critters in this area.  It shoots a 110-115 gr bullet at about 2600 fps.

Here is a thread on the 6.8 that will give you more information www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=121&t=350804

I only have reloaded or purchased Remington Ammo/Brass. They use large rifle primers. YMMV with other types. As far as the .221 Fireball that is what I read in a review in a magazine. Take that for what that's worth....

A 221 Fireball is merely a shortened 223 case.  You can make 221 brass from 223 or 222 with forming dies, and you can make 17 Mach 4 from 221 Fireball.
