I am going to be passing through TN tomorrow and will be carrying (SC does have reciprocity with TN) but just realized that part of my route takes me through The Great Smoky Montains National Park. Do I need to re-route or is it legal to pass through with a licensed CCW?

The TN Handgun Carry Permit is not valid in national, state, or county parks.  As far as I know, no state carry permit is valid in national parks.

Yea, I did a little more reading and decided to just re-route. Damned shame imo.

worse come to worst, just unlaod and separate your weapon and ammo, and don't  have it on your person when driving through. if you are not planning on stopping through there, it shouldn't be a problem.

If I remember right, as long as you are traveling, you are okay. It is a tie in with the FOPA (remember that thing that fucked us out of new MG's?). If you are actually visiting the park it is one thing, but not if you are conducting interstate travel on a recognized roadway. Hell any cop or trooper that pulled you over won't know the fucking difference anyways.

UnionWrkr -

Welcome to TN.
No problem, I go through the park several times a month with my weapon.
As long as you keep your weapon in your vehicle you will be fine. While in the National Park you will need to store the gun and the mag seperately.
Here is a section from the TN codes relevant to handgun carry. If it would make you feel better call (615) 251-8590 to make sure. This is the office in Nashville that issues our permits.

Section 39-17-1309(d)(1).

Limited exceptions to the school property possession restrictions exist under section 39-17-1310.

State administrative regulations govern the possession of firearms in:

School-administered child care programs (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. R. 0520-12-1-.14(5)(a)(3)(xii); R. 0520-12-1-.10(4)(f));

Group child care homes (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. R. 1240-4-1-.06(4)(k));

Drop-In child care centers (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. R. 1240-4-2-.08(8)(c));

Child care centers (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. R. 1240-4-3-.10(13)(d));

Family child care homes (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. R. 1240-4-4-.06(4)(k)); and

Residential child caring agencies (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. R. 1240-4-5-.04(3)(b)(1)(iii)(VII)).

Finally, Tennessee prohibits the use of firearms (including air and gas powered pistols and rifles) in parks and natural and historical areas. Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. R. 0400-2-2-.11. The possession of any firearm is prohibited unless it is unloaded and adequately cased, or broken down or otherwise packed in such a way as to prevent its use while in park areas. Id.

My guess is the TN code covers state parks not National parks.  It's worded very similar to the National Park version.

If you are just traveling.......don't ask, don't tell

Not like they can search the car if you say no and a dog doesn't get the odor of drugs
