Hey guys, I was wondering how many of you live in chattanooga? And, has anyone shot at the new indoor range on 58 hwy? I've been wanting to go check it out but haven't had the time lately.

I live just 5 miles south of Chattanooga. When I did live in Hamilton county I did quite a bit of business with Carter's, they have fairly good prices and the younger guy that works there knows quite a bit. The range is extremely nice and extremely expensive, you have to get a year membership to shoot and if I remember correctly it was $175-$200. But stop by any way, I much prefer doing business with them than the other dealers in Chattanooga.

If you haven't been to Legends in Athens you should try it. I like it better than Benton's.

E-mail me sometime and we can get together for a shoot at my Dad's farm.

Thanks Kyle

i haven't shot at that range- i'm a member of the chattanooga rifle club, which is 10 minutes down the road.  it's a very nice range as well.  don't talk about it in carter's though, i think the story is that that range was open after one of the owner's sons broke CRC rules and he started his range to put them outta buisiness- that's all just a rumor though.

but i'll agree, i give carter's a lot of business.  the younger guy that works in there (travis) is cool as hell and very knowledgeable.  he's more than willing to take the time to help you better understand things and make better purchases- good guy.  we need to have a chattanooga area shoot for sure though.

Thanks for the info guys, hey kyle we need to plan a shoot sometime. It would be cool if we could get some guys together and send some rounds down range.

I think that sounds great, I'm not realy around people who share an interest in the same type of shooting that I am. Everyone only gets together to sight hunting rifles or something like that. I would love to actually see some other ARs or nice 1911s.

I work at Dupont, so I have some strange hours. Just let me know with a little notice and I should be able to make it anywhere close.

Thanks Kyle

If I may, what's better about it? Benton's has a helluva selection, IMO.

All of this is my opinion of course, but I feel like Legends is like a mom and pop store that has a great selection. You can go in and talk to them and they actually know what they are selling. There prices are comparable if not better on several items.

One thing that really irks me about Benton's is here is one of the largest gun stores around and they actually have a sign on the front doors that says check all guns at the counter. I might as well be going in the mall with that attitude. It's ok for them to sell a gun to me, but even with a CCW and they don't want me carrying in the store.

I normally lurk here without typing anything. I feel like I have said too much already. My personal preference is to do business with someone else. I probably should not have said they are better but pretty equal in selection except higher end handguns, and the prices are similar.

Plus my daughter loves all of the animals at Legends which makes it awful easy to stay in there for a while.

Thanks Kyle

I've yet to see a gun shop w/o a "no carry sign". Too many opportunities for someone to say, "Hey, lookie at MY gun!" & the GD thing has a ND. Gunshows have this policy as well.

Yeah, the gun store police read this forum quite often.

That's what makes America, America!

I would recommend the Chattanooga rifle range over Carters. I have not shot at Carters but I have been a member of the Chattanooga Rifle Range since I moved here eight years ago. It really is a good place to shoot. If you have never been there I could take you there to check it out. The down side is that there is a waiting list to get in (at least there has been for the last couple years).

Carters has seemed a little over priced on items I have looked at. I think last time I asked he wanted $50 for a transfer.

Also I can give you some phone numbers of club officers if you need more info.

I was not worried by "the gun store police" reading my post.

I come hear to learn by people who have much more experience than I have with firearms. I feel like if I have nothing wothwhile to contribute it is better for me to remain quite. I was just giving my opinion on Carter's shooting range and while doing so I also gave a suggestion to try a new gun store. If you feel Benton's is the best gun store around I perfectly understand that. Several years ago when they were in the old store I loved going up there. They had by far the best prices around and no one could touch the selection. Since they have moved to the new store prices are competitve with the other gun stores but they do beat them like they used to.

As far as carry goes, Benton's is the only gun store that I have been in that has posted check all firearms at desk. I personally would not compare a gun store to a gun show, I would think (perhaps incorrectly) that gun shows may have to adhere to the rules of the building they are in and gun stores make the policy for themselves.
I would like to ask the names of the gun stores in the area you have seen that have this policy so I know not to carry in the store again.

As far as higher end I meant Kimbers and Springfields top models. Legends only carries a few Kimbers and Springfields. If you are in the market for these guns Benton's is the only place I know of around to handle these guns. I personally like Baers, Browns, RRA, and Wilson Combat so the only place I can go for that fix is the internet.

Thanks Kyle

I have no feeling one way or another, I'm just always on the lookout for a good gunstore. That's why I asked what made the other better over Benton's, is all.

Specialty Arms I know for sure has one. I'm sure there's others, Bass Pro is another.

The gunshop in Kingston carries Baer last I checked.

Shit, those bubba's ain't got a clue about ARs in any way, shape or form. That's not intended as an insult but it is a fact. They ain't too swift on handguns either.

If you are talking of Frontier firearms they have a few Browns and Wilson's but no Baers last time I checked. If you mean somwhere else I would love to know the name. I'm off all this week and would love to go look at some new ones.
I am not familiar with Specialty arms,  where are they located?

I normally do business with Carter's, Georgia Gun Trader, Darr's, Grant's in Dalton, or a little shop in Bledsoe near my brother.

Mr. Cole, do you live in the Chattanooga area? I would love to be able to get a few guys or girls together in the area for a shoot or just to see some of these fine weapons.

thanks Kyle

Downtown LaVergne, Rutherford Co.

Mr. Cole, do you live in the Chattanooga area?
Nah, I'm in Nashville but I get up to Polk Co. regularly.

Joe, I would def agree that chattanooga rifle club is one of, if not the nicest places around here. I would love to join but I hear thats its really expensive (that could be wrong, just what I was told) and then like you were saying about the waiting list. If I lie and say I've never been would you still take me up there to check it out. lol

I can't recall what the dues are for the Chat. rifle club. I don't think it is too bad. There may be an initiation fee. I tried looking it up on the web site but had trouble getting on it. They may have it down for some reason. www.chatrifleclub.org . I would be glad to take you there some time. We have a 7 week old baby so my time is a little tight. I'll send you an email with my info so you can get in touch with me. I need an excuse to get out and shoot!!

membership dues are $100 per year- which is a helluva deal for what you get.  there is an initiation fee, but i have no idea how much- i think it fluctuates from year to year for whatever reason.  i also don't know if there's a waiting list, but if there is you should get on it.  if you guys head out there send me an im- if i'm in town i'll meet you there.

By the way, do you fly out of CHA? (I assume you fly based on your user name). I work at the approach control there.

I have been in Carter's but never tried the range.  I am a member of Highland Sportsman in Hixson and do most of my shooting there.  I have been a guest at Chattanooga Rifle Club and enjoyed it a lot - if it wasnt so far from my house I would join.  Stop by the Ammo Dump on Hwy 58 and ask about it.  I do most of my business at Darr's in Red Bank, especially ammo.

I am up for a group shoot also, let me know when and where.

I only buy ammo from darr's when I'm on my way to the range and I'm in a pinch. He's normally high on ammo. The only good thing about darr's in my opinion is he's about 5 min's from my house. lol

Lately that has been true, he usually has/had a pretty good selection of milsurp.  Any other places for a good ammo selection in this area?

i've found darr's to be quite high on some milsurp stuff.  i was in there this last weekend and he wanted 249 for a yugo m48- that's a hundred bucks more than they go for elsewhere- he wanted 140 for a 24/47 go figure.  their prices are high but i still do business with them on a regular basis- they're good people.

I'm just screwing with ya, we had talked about meeting up here soon (hopefully at the chattanooga rifle club) if everyone can get the dates to mesh. I have about 8 or 9 guns I've never fired! I need to get to the range. lol

I bought a new Glock last week at Legends for $459.00 with two hi-cap mags. Anyone who has not been there needs to see it. On Hwy 11 in Athens right across from Mcminn High School. And no I don't get anything for endorsing them.
