went down to the G&F and bought a wolf tag friday. $18. mortality quota and reporting requirements like black bear.
I hunted wolves when I lived in northern canada, where they were a game animal and a furbearer. if the hunt isn't disrupted by a lawsuit, it could be interesting. for the rest of oct and into nov I expect that most wolves shot will be by elk hunters who happen on one. if the quota isn't filled by dec, it will get interesting. that is a good time to hunt wolves- not as good as breeding season, which is a month or two later, but there is plenty of snow. the area that surrounds my property is a bonus area- it starts out as a predator hunt area for a couple of weeks before going to game animal status like the rest of the northwest part of the state. I'll be looking for pack sign while I'm elk hunting, and if I can find them I'll try some calling. |

I am excited for the season! Our wolf season is open all the way till end of Feb! and hopefully by then we will be able to shoot three of the em, depending on the quotas I'm sure!
I was up in the back country a few weeks back and we heard em howling at 4am but we werent able to get a shot in on any. although I do believe that, while i was goofing around with my call, that I did get one to come thru the area. We saw a real nice print right over the top of our tracks on the way out. Good luck out there! |
