Jon Tester is pushing the State Department to bring back thousands of old WWII-vintage rifles from South Korea so citizens can buy them through a government program. The State Department previously rejected South Korea's proposal to sell its surplus of American-made M1 Carbines and M1 Garand rifles to U.S. buyers. Tester says that agency is wrong to declare the firearms could "be exploited by individuals seeking firearms for illicit purposes." He told Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that rejecting the sale "sets a dangerous precedent" and runs afoul of gun rights. The senator is bringing legislation to let groups buy such guns from foreign governments. It is co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Max Baucus, while U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg is backing a version in the House. |

Tester has been a busy boy the last few weeks showing how he can shoot, is a friend to gun owners, yada yada yada. He is barely B rated by GOA, and since I have talked to him, he is not really a friend to us. Just what is convenient to him at the time. If someone would come along that was better, I think they would have good chance. -CZ |

If someone would come along that was better, I think they would have good chance. -CZ When he was running there was an article in the independent record where they asked a bunch of questions of him and Conrad Burns. On one of the questions he said he wants to reopen the NFA registry and allow law abiding Americans to purchase select fire weapons. He's probably one of three people in Congress who know what the NFA registry is. Rehberg is one of the others. I disagree with him on health care and a host of other issues, but I'll give the guy credit where credit is due. He was one of the guys who stepped up when the DOD wanted to stop selling us brass last year. This year he's trying to get American made firearms imported. I'd be curious to know why the GOA gave him a B-rating because as far as I can tell he's about as friendly to gun owners as can be. EDIT: Actually, it looks like the GOA gave Tester an F rating. because he meets their criteria for a "philisophically committed anti-gunner." Seems like there may be some politics at play to me. |

The problem with those guns, is that they are U.S. Government property. The Koreans want to sell them back to us. That's a no-no. We need to convince them to give us back what's ours and then ensure that the Army doesn't destroy them, but ships them to the CMP. |
