A Wyoming man swimming from San Francisco to Alcatraz early Friday morning was rescued by a ferry crew and detained in Tiburon amid confusion over whether he was carrying weapons. He wasn't, police said. Matthew Huntington, 29, visiting from Sundance, Wyo., had always dreamed of making the roundtrip between San Francisco and Alcatraz. He left the city at about 4:30 a.m. Friday and made it to Alcatraz, but misjudged the tides in San Francisco Bay and found it impossible to return, according to Tiburon police. Huntington, who was wearing a wetsuit and life jacket, waved an orange flag in the water off Alcatraz, capturing the attention of the crew of a Blue and Gold Fleet ferry that was heading without passengers from San Francisco to Tiburon, said Tiburon police Sgt. Mike Mourgos. But confusion ensued when the crew misjudged some of Huntington's personal effects that fell in the water as possible weapons - including a camcorder and small knife used for protection - and called police. The crew rescued Huntington at about 6 a.m. and took him to Tiburon, where Tiburon police detained him until it was determined that he did not have weapons and did not pose a threat, Mourgos said. A cooperative and apologetic Huntington indicated that he was sorry for putting the boat crew and police through the ordeal, Mourgos said. The Blue and Gold Fleet returned him with other commuters to San Francisco, free of charge. Some of our fellow Wyomingites are crazy I don't know the fellow, but a good friend of mine does. |

I've been on one of the Blue and Gold boats. They hire them out for parties and stuff. They've been operating those things for a while.
Anyway, the currents that swirl around under the Golden Gate bridge are not something to be taken lightly. I have a friend who went through one particular spot near the GG bridge in a smaller boat. He said that he puckered up pretty good. |
