Okay, I've just been given a firm job offer for a position located in / around Provo, and am wondering if any of you folks have advice as to areas to avoid, areas of special interest, etc...
Also, does anyone know of a real estate agent with experience with the VA home loan program? I am an Iraq veteran currently in the Army Reserves, so any assistance with securing housing would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! |
| See this thread for info. Unfortunately Zaphod didn't make it, but there is a wealth of info in there. |

Congrats.
I live in Orem, work in Springville. I work right next door (the building directly East of) to Rangemasters of Utah, a gunshop and shooting range in Springville. If you ever want to go shooting at lunch or afterwork, let me know. I have a range membership there and will take you. Semper Fidelis, Kent |

Not sure if you bought your place in Mapleton, or if you are renting, but if you are a first time home buyer I would suggest an FHA loan over the VA loan. Even if you are not a first time buyer, a conventional 15 year fixed loan will be far better than a VA loan. They really aren't that great. Renting, in my opinion, is a better deal right now even with the "buyers market".

First: I want to thank you all for the warm welcome to a soon to be Utah Resident!
We will be arriving NLT the 25th of September, as I have a start start date of the 27th with my new job. We're going to be living in Mapleton, so compared to the commute and traffic I'm used to out here in the PRK, I'm actually looking forward to it! I pick up my first complete AR lower tomorrow afternoon and as soon as funding is available (after we get settled in and the pay starts flowing at the new job), I'll be looking to complete my AR with a standard flattop upper. I'm looking forward to being able to relax a little bit and not feel like quite as much of an outsider (given that we're fairly conservative socially, and economically). Any advice for a newcomer to the area? |

If you're LDS, you'll feel right at home.
If you're not LDS, you'll feel right at home so long as you don't get offended that many of your neighbors are LDS... some people get their panties in a wad about people being friendly. I suspect that you're not LDS... so, move in and be friendly with your neighbors. When they inevitably ask if you're LDS, simply reply that you're not, but many of your new neighbors are and you look forward to getting to know them :) I'm just as good friends with my LDS neighbors as I am with the non-LDS ones. They're just good Christian people... something often forgotten by some of the ilk in this State. Semper Fidelis |

Any advice for a newcomer to the area? Only bit of advice––Learn to put up with the UT county "quirks." I grew up LDS (was active until middle of '06), moved to Spanish Fork in '06 from San Bernardino County in CA, graduated HS from Spanish Fork High in '07, moved to Orem in '08 and have been here ever since. There's some strange things you'll just have to accept for what they are. It's a great place to live with lots of good people, plenty of things to do (even on Sunday |
