SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Bountiful man is among four people indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with a scheme that supplied the U.S. military with prohibited Chinese-made ammunition.

Federal prosecutors say Ralph G. Merrill, 65, provided financial and managerial assistance to the Miami Beach, Fla.-based company AEY, Inc.

The government paid AEY more than $10 million for 35 shipments of ammunition, which company officials said were from Albania. Prosecutors now say the ammunition was from China.

Shipments from the company were used to supply allied forces in Afghanistan.

In March, the Army told company owner and president Efraim Diveroli it had suspended AEY from government contract work pending the outcome of a criminal investigation

Diveroli, Merrill and two others -- David Packouz, director and vice president of AEY Inc. as well as Alexander Podrizki, an associate who was stationed in Tirana, Albania -- now face a 71-count indictment alleging conspiracy, making false statements to a federal agency and fraud.

Diveroli, Packouz and Podrizki made an initial appearance in a Miami court Friday afternoon.

Merrill made an appearance in Salt Lake City's U.S. District Court on Friday. He was released without bond and will make an initial appearance in a Miami court on June 27, said Melodie Rydalch, spokeswoman for Utah's U.S. attorney.

"These are serious charges and we are taking them very seriously," Merrill's attorney Peter Stirba said.

A telephone message for Merrill left at his Bountiful home was not immediately returned Friday.

You know that they are also being sued by HK for patent infringement???

It is really too bad because I liked Vector.  They have always treated me right.

I LOVE my matching Polish Vector AK that I purchased direct from their shop in North Salt Lake a year or two ago.  They make nice guns and have top notch customer service.  Do you know how many RPDs, RPK74's, AKs, Uzi, HK clones, ect. have come out of there?  They have been great source of guns to the firearm community.  I'm not saying it is OK that the owners might be jerks to the employees, but they sure are not jerks to customers from what I have seen and heard...

I am definitely not happy if Vector is effected by one of the owner's extracurricular business problems.

Well for those of us local to Vector maybe we'll be able to buy them out cheap

We have several guns from there, it is really too bad but if they are guilty then, unfortunately, they deserve what they get.

Honestly it will be bad if Vector Arms goes under. For one thing I don't think my Vector UZI will be worth as much. And the more firearms manufacturers there are out there the lower prices will stay.

That said I know nothing about the arms deal...

I really don't see the logic here.

ETA:  OK, so I"m supposed to be pissed off that someone in UT aligned the sale of ALBANIAN..,  Let that sink in real good... ammo to "allied" forces AND- it turns out it was of Chinese origin?

Let me see if I understand this.  People buy cheap chinese toys and give them to their children which in turn poisons and/or kills them and that's wrong.  But when chinese ammo is supplied to "allied" troops in order to kill our enemies, it's also wrong?  Excuse me if I'll take chinese ammo over lead laden toys for our children.

Give me chi-comm ammo, keep your toys! (It's for the children)

Albanian ammo.... That sounds like Exxon cars to me.

It is not the product but the ethics behind it.  Let's say I have you over for a BBQ (most who know me are already starting to salivate) and I feed you what I say is pork ribs when in fact I am actually feeding you horse ribs (if that sounds good perhaps kangaroo ribs, you get the picture).  Granted the BBQ sauce would probably make them taste just as good but wouldn't you feel a little upset about it if you found out after the fact?  Now the difference between Albanian ammo and chinese ammo.  Chinese ammo tends to burn rather dirty.  While most here in the comfort of their local range don't seem to have a problem with that.  The boys in the sandbox are using AR/M4s that are waiting to malfunction.  The dirtier the ammo the sooner that happens.  Add that on top of that malfunction costing time and lives and all the sudden a little lead paint does not sound so bad (at least the kid is alive after eating the paint).  Hope that helps clarify the logic.  If not, then I understand.  But for those of us with friends and family in the sandbox this is more than just selling one thing and giving another (which is also bad) but could utlimately cost lives (something about the lowest bidder making things that are supposed to save your life leaves you feeling naked in the field).

uscombatdiver:

I understand "why" it's an issue...  I just see a lot more wrong than what the OP brings up.

Unless I knew more about this particular situation- I'm assuming they're talking about a supply of 7.62x39 to other "allies".  I vastly prefer Chi-comm ammo for my AK/SKS rifles but maybe it's the forbidden fruit that seems to taste the best?  In other words, why isn't this stuff deep and cheap at my local gun-hut?  And yes, I know the answer to that question as well.

Now if it's 5.56 we're talking about...  There'd be a whole lot of wrong right there.  (Since none of my AK variants are in 5.56 and there ain't no way I'd put dirty ammo through my D.I. ARs)

Just to be clear I'm not talking about hanging them high at noon, just what they deserve for bad business practices.  And I was under the impression the rounds were 5.56x45 (not that it detracts from the business end) but unless 7.62x39s are being used in an AR variation it should not be a problem.

As for AKs that shoot 223/5.56x45 if you're in Utah come join us I have a nice Yugo that eats 223/5.56x45s and is a pleasure to shoot.  I don't shoot my AR anymore because of the problem I mentioned above, I hate scrapping the carbon off the rear of the bolt and out of the chamber (and I don't use cheap dirty ammo either).

The case sounds like total BS, another malicious prosecution, i.e. Mike Nifong the DA who prosecuted the Duke Lacrosse players. The man was released without bond anyways. Even for a traffic warrant, they usually have like a $500 bond at least. It sucks if they go under, I was going to have my MP5 pistol built by them, they can do it cheaper than the other builders for only $550 and they are local. I hope they don't go under.   Vector makes great guns, it will be a blow to the firearms community if they go under. If they any company deserves to go under, it should at least be SW/Bobcat/Coharie/Tactical Weapons/Omega Arms/Top Notch Accessories/ACME parts/etc and I even own some of his weapons.

They were going to build an MP5 out of a parts kit for me, but the other day I called them, they said they are no longer doing any custom work

Last I heard Todd Bailey pulled some of his usual BS and Vector didn't want to play in it so they dropped the MP5 clone line of firearms.

They have sold all of their uzi parts and they are no longer making uzi's either.  Just a heads up if you didn't know.

I just bought a Vector AK and MP5SD, both are excellent builds.  I am quite happy with them.  I also just bought 5k rounds of IMI Uzi ammo for $700 from Rex @ Vector.
