My little fam and I just got back from a family reunion in Highland, it's really nice up there right now!

We took the kiddos to the Natural History (dinosaur) museum there at Thanksgiving Point, and E22CAPT and I got to go browse the Cabelas store .

With everything going on though, we did NOT get to go hike up to Timp Cave.  I haven't been there for over a decade.  Heck, close to TWO decades! (I feel old now....)

So when's the best time to visit in the future?  My uncle told us that it's getting pretty busy up there, and you have to get tickets for the tours, but he hasn't been in a few years either.

Anyone been recently?  I'd like to take another trip up there to see the caves, and stay with the family again.  Uncle says he'll also loan us his 4-wheelers to ride around up there, but I'm torn on when to go....  Shoot, I don't even know when the snow starts anymore and when they close the place down for winter!

I'll see if I can find a website, but some recent first hand local knowledge would be helpful....

TIA!

edited to fix the spelling of Timpanogos....

I haven't been there in close to 20 years either.  I'm waiting for my daughter to be old enough to hike herself up the hill.

I was raised on a farm near there; when I was a boy there was one house between I15 and our farm, right on the that dip in the Alpine highway. There was also one light on the horizon at night. Looks a lot different now doesn't it

That's not hard to imagine.  I lived in NE Utah about 15 years ago, the way the SLC valley has changed blows my mind.  The little town I grew up in back in NC has gone crazy, makes me sick to visit there now.

Timp cave would probably be best in the non-tourist season. Call the park and ask them when its the quietest around there. My guess is a tuesday in winter would be pretty darn quiet. The weather should be pretty consistent underground

I went 2 years ago.  We went in late September I belive, and actually got some snow on the way up and down.  I think late Auguest is nice, in the evenings.  AF canyon cools down pretty quick at night up on the cliffs, even during the summer.

I did find the website, and it says the cave closes mid October until spring.  I didn't realize that the fees had gone up so much!  I guess it's not too bad- $3/car to get in there, and then $7/person (I think) for the cave tours.  Plus an extra $.50/ticket if you purchase them in advance by phone.

I might have to wait until next Spring to make it up there... now that the kiddos are old enough to be in school, I have to work around that for trips just like most other American families.

Thanks for the input, guys.  We'll make it up again as soon as we can.... although the next time we might stay at the uncle's cabin in Sundance.  Feb is a great month for skiing (aka Bed_Head falling down, yard sales....) there!
