Any one have any recommendations for a good machine shop in the SLC/Hill AFB area? I just got back from Korea for mid tour and my truck is jacked up pretty good. The wife let someone borrow it, they overheated it and continued to drive it. They couldn't figure out where all the coolant was going. I pulled the dip stick out and it was grey for about 10 inches. I emptied out about 3 gallons of oil and water from the oil pan. The head gasket is pretty screwed up, I just want to get the head checked out for now. The cylinder walls look fairly good considering the circumstances. Thanks guys. Dan

There are a lot of machine shops in that area, even more in salt lake. I would just pick up a phone and start calling, you can even try checking out local repair shops, and even dealerships (you might need to talk to someone who actually does the work at the dealership) and see who they use for their machine work.
There was one in salt lake I used years ago and it cost me about $50 including parts to seat the valves replace the springs and seals and to machine the mating surface flat. (Aluminum heads)

Also you might want to check your main bearings if you got coolant in your oil.
Water + oil = bad mojo

Thank you for replying. I was hoping that we had a ARFCOM machine shop guy here to do the work.
I will be doing a complete rebuild, but not until after I get back from Korea. I am only home for a month.

So are you at Kunsan or Osan?  I was stationed at both in the '90's and stationed at Hill twice as well.  There was one shop just east of the base that was pretty decent to me and it was called Shade Tree (something?) as I can't remember the rest of their name and don't know if they're around anymore as this was back in '98.  Good luck and hope this might help.

I'm at Osan, 5 more months. Hopefully my liver will survive. Thanks for the heads up, I'll look the shop up.
