Anyone interseted? I thought it might be nice if we could get a 3 state shoot together with ID, UT, and WY (you MT folks are welcome too, you're just a little farther away). Anyone have some ideas as to a location somewhere in Southwest WY, Northern UT or Southern/Central ID that wouldn't be a huge drive but could be somewhat convenient for a large number of people? Maybe somewhere between Boise and Salt Lake that's not too far from Highway 30 so the WY folks could join us? Just a thought I had today. Would be nice to meet some of you guys from the surrounding states. I'm open for any and all suggestions. |

We're starting to get a little interest here! Anyone from Pocatello that could let us know about some shooting spots? Salt Lake to Pocatello: 165 miles Boise to Pocatello: 237 miles Rock Springs to Pocatello: 308 miles Not quite in the middle for everyone, but probably the closest we'll be able to get to the most people. Plus it's a reasonably sized town with restaurants/hotels for those traveling the farthest. Isn't there a casino not far from Pocatello? Something to do that evening after the shoot. |
| I might be game for a Pocatello gathering, depending on the date. Fort Hall is the casino you are thinking of... just a few miles north. IIRC its on an indian reservation, but I might be wrong. I'm not sure how much BLM or National Forest land there is in that area, as far as finding a decent shooting spot, but there has got to be something. |
I'm not sure anyone has ever posted from Pocatello. There are a bunch from around Boise ( ETA, from this link, here are some shooting ranges. Not sure if they allow Class III or not but if people don't mind shooting at an actual range I can email "[email protected]". Yeah, I am actually home for a month or so in Pocatello. I can probably hook us up with the oregon trail range for like 5 bucks a person. It is a pretty nice range, out to 800 meters (I know it says 200m, but when I was in the national guard unit here, we shot the targets out to 800m, I got the hookup as far as that goes). You guys want me to look into it? -Ben |
Please! Sounds like some people have Class III they'll be bringing, will this range allow that? |
I'll go check this afternoon. Will give an update later tonight. -Ben |
As soon as we get some range details, we'll figure out a date far enough ahead that everyone can get paperwork filed and room reservations if need be. |
The guy I wanted to talk to wasn't at his store when I got there. Will check tomorrow. I WILL get this done for you guys before I leave for Utah on thursday. -Ben |
Much appreciated! |

OK, I was told today several things. 1) Class III is welcome at the range up two and a half mile (Oregon trail I think you guys called it, locals never use that name). 2) It will be 5 dollars a person for the day. 3) Rob (one of the guys on the board of directors) wants to shoot someones full auto if he brings his own ammo. Is this agreeable to the crowd? Or should I hook us up with a good BLM spot? -Ben |
+1 we could set up some of the "drills"(IDPA type stuff) we've been runing here in the desert. that's always been fun. plus it might give us the option to do a little hunting as well. SM |

BLM is the better option if all goes well. But if Pocatello is anything like Boise you never know from one day to the next if your going to drive out and have all the shooting spots (at least the good ones with proper backstops) taken by people getting there ahead of you. That would be my only concern about relying on BLM land as opposed to a range. |
Pocatello has a MUCH smaller population then Boise. I don't think it will be a problem. ![]() -Ben |
Which do you think would better serve our purposes? |
|
How many people do we really think will show? I know when we get 10+ people out in the desert things can get a little dicey. Being on a range allows for less freedom but in some cases having more rules is a good thing. I'll go either way but I'm less likely to stick around if 30 people are blasting in all directions all the time. As far as drills go too many people means much longer wait times. Around five shooters is OK but 10+ isn't so hot. |
I agree with the 30 people assessment. Lots of people out blasting make me nervous to. But so far we only have 6 or 7 people saying they will show. |
If you set up 2 or 3 drills and run them side by side you can run more people in just a little more time than it takes to run one through one drill. Shoot drill one, step back and let shooter #2 shoot drill 2, step back and let shooter #3 run through, THEN score all 3 drills, reset and do it all over again. That way you don't have to worry about having more than 5 people showing up to do this and having to wait a half hour before you get to shoot again. |
Range or BLM is OK with me. I don't see any issue with Aug 5-6 other than it'll probably be hotter than a bitch. Let's see, camper on the truck, check; generator, check; AC pumping nice cold air, check; refer full of cold beer, check. Guess I can rough it and deal with the summer heat if we don't have to four wheel it in to the shootin spot. ![]() Just kidding. I'll probably just drive my Suburban and stay in a hotel. |
I'll stay in a motel room to. I don't own a camper and I don't feel like sleeping in a tent somewhere. So are we in tentative agreement that RockHard13F checks out a range and we meet on the 5th and 6th? Or is there still some disagreement over BLM land vs. an actual shooting range? When it comes right down to it, I don't care which, as long as everyone maintains proper shooting discipline. But we need to make a decision once and for all!! Medicmandan, maybe we need to have a poll? |
Agreed, I'll get one up. We need an idea of how many people really want to go and where they are coming from. If there are only a couple of us that aren't in Boise, I'd rather drive up there than have all of you guys drive down. |
Yeah, but it's hotter than a pistol this time of year and there is *no* shade out there except what you bring yourself. We were easily at around 100 degrees last Saturday (maybe a few under, but maybe a few over to). As far as everyone coming up there, that would be cool, we do have some nice shooting spots ('cept for the heat), but most of us from around Boise that have indicated we want to go have already agreed to drive down to Poky. I'd rather still do that than loose anyone from Utah (or Pocatello for that matter) that does not want to drive all the way up here. |
