So, if a new gun store was to open up  and it had a sign saying  “As long as I don’t see it, I don’t care if it is loaded”.   Would that be offensive?

Whats the point your trying to make?  That you allow CCW? Do you even have a choice in the matter?

Why post a sign like that?
Seems kinda childish.
What shop are you referring to btw.

So open carry wouldn't be allowed in that store?

It was meant to be a pro CCW sign.   You always have a choice, my choice would be to allow it.

A new store is pending on the East side of the Portland area, if everything works out.   I have been paying attention to what ARFCOM members want.  It was meant to be a joke to another store in the area that does not recognize that people have the right to carry in this state. I would get mad when I was on duty and they treated me like a human and when I went in off duty I was treated like crap.
I worked behind the counter for a few years and seeing silly things happen, like the lady that said, “I want bullets just like this” as she pointed a loaded 357 at me.   When I asked her nicely not to point it at me, she told me “I wasn’t planning on shooting you”.
I contacted one insurance company and the nice lady who sounded like she was 12 years old on the phone told me “You are not going to have loaded guns in your store are you?”  I am not going with them.
The goal is to be able to feed my family off this; I plan to treat people, as I want to be treated when I shop. I am not going to say the name here until I buy a membership so I do not break any COC.
There are few shining examples in here of how to treat people when they buy from your store.  Sadly, there are a few examples of how not to treat people. I think if I can do as good of a job as a nice guy in Vernonia, I should be able to be able to keep the doors open.

I would prefer that over the

"No loaded weapons" signs I usually see.

But then again I got berated on here last time I complained about my local shop putting that sign up.

If you must have a sign, how about "no loaded weapons without CCW or holster"? Personally, if I don't see a sign, I figure the shop is CCW friendly :) Of course I also realise why the signs go up. I have seen and heard of plenty of stupid people bringing in loaded guns for work or trade. Eventually someone gets a loaded gun pointed their way

How about....

"Loaded weapons permitted in holsters only....and If you point a loaded gun at me, I will point one back, just to return the favor!"

If you have to have a sign I like:

We support your right to carry lawfully in Oregon but if you act in any manner that is unsafe you will be asked to leave.

That way you don't tell people how to carry, what to carry, or restrict them from carrying in a way that is less than what they could do walking down the street but you still CYA on the safety issue. For me it's only been an issue at one store where they have a sign and I won't shop there.

Why aren't the four laws of firearms posted at gun stores?? They should be on the front door! And just because you say no loaded guns, doesn't mean you have to care if people do it or even kick them out.

Hint Hint - call a couple of agencies and ask them if they have a surplus lines company that has a program for gun shops or the firearms industry.

hell no that wouldn't be offensive.

as far as i'm concerned a CCW is just that. you don't go around bragging it or showing it off. you keep it to yourself. and hopefully you never have to use it. who give's a flying f#$% what the sign on a public buisiness says. you don't talk about being a CCW.

+1 ....................if you have to have a sign.

something with the 4 rules of firearm saftey seems wise too.

Do you really need a sign in the first place?

This.

I would go with no sign at all. No need to bring attention to the fact that some of your clients may be armed.

You are doing this to make money, so at the end of the day you want your doors open to anyone that will spend $$ in your store. Over the years I have worked behind gun counters, sold at shows and can say that there are alot of people that buy guns and ammo that are not ok with CCW. That said, they still spend money.

Just my opinion of course so take it for whats it worth.

It does come from years of doing business in guns and dealing with people that, well, are as anti gun as any left field liberal.
I remember a couple coming into the shop years back looking to buy a shotgun for HD defense. They walked around, asked a few questions etc. The wife kept giving me the stink eye. I blew it off at first and helped the husband pick a shotty and some ammo. Midway through the paperwork I finally looked at her and said "Do I have food in my teeth or something?" trying to introduce a little humor. Fail. Her eyes squinted and she looked right at me and and said "No, I just think it disgusting and disgraceful to the creatures of this earth to not only have a stuffed deer head on the wall, but to hang a cigarette from its mouth and put glasses on it!" I was floored! I held back the laughter while the husband turned and said "Honey stop it!". The only thing that I could come up with was "He is a spy for the rest of the forest and is trying to blend in."
Her husband chuckled under his breath and she stormed out. He apologized and finished up the 4473.

Bottom line is that gun shops these days need to make every dime they can from ANYONE that comes in.

Good luck and happy new year!

Don't try to be humorous, you're a gun store not a comedy club.

No sign at all, or the language posted above that Dillon uses.

Good luck.

Yes, and that's why I don't understand this entire thread.  If I carry concealed, NONE OF YOU WILL EVER KNOW IT, and thus a sign or policy about CCW becomes completely irrelevent.

I like the Dillon sign the best so far.  If you carry concealed, please keep it that way.

Having said that, I keep thinking that one of the 4 firearms safety rules "Don't point your firearm at anything you don't intend to shoot".  People who unholster or uncase them have to point it at something...I'm thinking they don't really want to shoot the wall, floor, ceiling or where ever else they point it...so keep it put away.

But people bringing in firearms to sell do present a difficult situation.  They have to allow the shop to look at the item.  How to do that safely is another thread though.  The OP just asked if his sign was offensive...it wasn't offensive to me.
