I just sold a handgun online and I was going to use FEDEX Overnight Service. Do you guys use them or another carrier. I'm not really sure which carrier is the best.
Thanks ahead of time for your thoughts.

I have had better experiences with UPS than FEDEX.  The counter people that I have dealt with have never blinked when I have shipped firearms from a UPS center.  Of course you have to go to one of their main shipping centers.  With FEDEX, even after quoting them their own regulations, I had a lady in Virginia Beach, VA,  tell me that she couldn't ship the handgun for me.  I immediately requested a supervisor, who had to do some research before agreeing that I was right.

If you're in the West side area, go down to A Cut Above Pawn in Beaverton. He'll ship you're pistol USPS Priority mail (he can cuz he has a FFL) insured for less than overnight with either UPS or Fedex.

Real cool guys to deal with to. BSW

I would go with UPS, Fedex is way too expensive.

I just shipped 400 rounds of Australian .308 with UPS for about $50, on the other hand Fedex wanted $237 to ship the same package . I know we are talking apples and oranges between shipping handguns and ammo, but after seeing how much they wanted vs. UPS I cannot give them my business again.

You CAN ship USPS...they don't like it but they HAVE to...put it in a flatrate box, no markings saying it's a gun or it may not find it's destination.  I've had them come to my FFL this way, and others I know of have accepted them.

Unless you like to overpay someone else to ship it.

Unless you have a FFL it's illegal to ship an handgun via USPS. Good luck with your insurance if you lie as to what's in the box. Your FFL can get mailed handguns from OTHER FFLs.

'11.1.2 Handguns

Pistols, revolvers, and other firearms capable of being concealed on the person (referred to as handguns) are nonmailable unless mailed between the parties listed in 11.1.3 and 11.1.5 after the filing of an affidavit or statement required by 11.1.4 and 11.1.6. '

Curious, do you know if pre 1896/ antique, or black powder pistols are exempt? Under federal law they are non-guns.

I'd answer..........

SHIPPING ANTIQUES

Under the Federal definition, an antique firearm (as described below) can be sent ANYWAY you like.   But, local and state laws may vary, so remember to check them too.

Title 18, Section 921(a)(16) then defines "antique firearm" as follows:

The term "antique firearm" means -

(A) any firearm (including any firearm with a matchlock, flintlock, percussion cap, or similar type of ignition system) manufactured in or before 1898; and any replica of any firearm described in subparagraph (A) if such replica -

(i) is not designed or redesigned for using rimfire or conventional centerfire fixed ammunition, or

(ii) uses rimfire or conventional centerfire fixed ammunition which is no longer manufactured in the United States and which is not readily available in the ordinary channels of commercial trade."

And, from the ATF site, FAQ............

(A3) Do antique firearms come within the purview of the GCA? [Back]

No.

[18 U.S.C. 921(a)(3) and (16), 27 CFR 478.11 and 478.141(d)]

Advice for shipping an Antique Firearm.......

Ship them via the USPS, registered mail and insured. They are "antique firearms" and therefore are not controlled by the same laws as regular firearms.

c. Unloaded antique firearms sent as curios or museum pieces are
generally permitted as specified in Exhibit 432.1 and DMM C024.2.0.

And, beware: Just because a firearm is a, "qualified C&R Firearm" it's NOT always, an "antique firearm."
