My buddy has a few and buys them from a breeder in Canada.  Like 1500 bucks a pup or some crazy shit.

As for me I'd never own one.  Been bit by 2 and I swear everyone I see wants a piece of my ass.  They just give me that look like "get ready to get your ass tore up".

I'll stick with my boxer and mastiff.

Go w/a Rottie. Better temperments- not so high strung and great pets as well as protectors and gaurdians. My wife used to breed and practice Schutzhund. If you're serious about owning a serious dog do yourself a favor and look into Schutzhund.

German Shepherd has become a VERY popular breed in the last 50 years - to its detriment. Numerous GS breeders in Oregon.  Very few worth a look in my experience.  Too much money and too easy to just be a puppy-mill.  Too many breeders consider show lines to be the goal.  Sloping croup (hyena legs) no nose and no brain.  Easy to get an annoying, absolutely useless but good-looking dog.

Any good kennel breeding real dogs from real (i.e. Schutzhund) blood lines will have most of the pups sold well before the litter drops.  You buy a space in line and take your pick.

You have to do a lot of homework.  Hit the performance dog/field trial type shows (NOT the AKC shows).  Ask people with the kind of dog you want where they bought.  Meet the breeders at the shows.  Ask the breeder about his philosophy and working blood lines.

You absolutely must meet both the sire and the dame before you invest.  They will be your puppy's future.  No more no less.  Require certified hips and elbows (!) back 3 generations on both sides.

A good German Shepherd is a precision instrument, a friend who will always have your back though it cost him his life.

A puppy-mill sport is just a big stupid hyperactive responsibility with a pretty face.  Sheps can live 15 years or more.  A LONG time to appreciate a good decision or to regret a hasty choice.

Best of luck.

Thanks for all the info, I grew up with Shepherds in the family, two K9 units with my uncle and all from Schutzhund blood lines. My family had 2 themselves but family dogs not trained as working dogs. Great companions and always a family member right up till the bitter end.
I will never get anything else, been looking for a while and I know it takes time and finding the right info is of the utmost importance to me.

I'm too scared about overbreeding to want to buy a full blooded GSD or Lab.

I hear way too many horror stories.

Plus there's a million good dogs that need a good home out there.

IMO too many people make the mistake of thinking breed is the most important thing when thinking of what they want out of the dog, it's just not true.

Your training technique and commitment/follow through to the dog's training is the most important factor to get what you want out of a dog.

The next available pups aren't due to be born until February, but I've been very happy with my GSD from them (he's almost six months now). Schutzhund lines back six generations, etc etc etc.

From their site :

• Guaranteed sound character
• Selected for your own personal needs
• We ship anywhere in the USA and Canada
• Guaranteed by contract to be free of Hip Dysplasia
• Parents hips have been certified for over 15 generations
• Both Parents titled to a minimum of Schutzhund I or higher

Our pup was $1200, so they ain't cheap, but worth every penny in my opinion.

Another option to a GSD is a Belgian Malinois.

He's asking about a German Shepherd, not a Malinois, not a pit bull, not a rottweiler...

My doctor runs a kennel in Mulino - he's a very careful breeder, does a great job with his dogs.  It's a real labor of love...  Jean-Luc is involved in Schutzhund as well...  He's not breeding for volume - he breeds for quality, and one of his priorities is temperament and soundness - not producing a dog that can be sold no matter what.

Here's his site - looks like there might be a couple of litters available.

Go to the Humane Society and make a new friend forever...

( I do understand if you really want a purebred, my mom has two very expensive Dobermans. Just throwing it out there... Lot of animals need homes this time of year, especially in this economy)

Ill take my Beagle any day of the week. Sleeps 18 hours a day. Will attack the cat on command and I never have to worry about getting sued over him biting some kid for petting him. Ill have the lawsuit for shooting the crackhead that breaks into the house to take a shit in my dishwasher.

Try blackhillsgsd.com.  They've been breeding GSDs for families for 20 years.  Mine is Buddy on the puppy page. He's almost three now and you're welcome to meet him if you want.  He is perfect.
