Unofficial 'Oregon cocktail' named Wednesday

04:49 PM PDT on Wednesday, October 1, 2008

By DAVID KROUGH, kgw.com Staff

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland’s world-renown restaurant scenesters are calling the shots to name a state cocktail.

As a part of the Oregon Bounty events judges at Bluehour on Wednesday planned to name the "Unofficial Official Oregon Cocktail."

Cheryl Meloy of Portland came up with the winner, called "Hike, fish, go camping punch." It contains Pendelton whiskey, McMenamin's Terminal Gravity IPA, lemon and limeade.

Travel Oregon’s first annual Oregon Bounty celebrates local cuisine and artists.

It’s taking place during two months and highlights travel experiences, fresh hop beer "Tastivals," artisan spirit events, fall harvest festivals and overnight packages at historic inns and hotels.

Finalists were set to choose the winner Wednesday afternoon followed by an Oregon Bounty happy hour that’s open to the public at 4:30.

You could always substitute another Pale Ale.

It actually sounds like something I'd try.

Beer and Whiskey don't mix well for me.  I give it a thumbs down.  And the "Hiking, Fishing and go camping punch" sounds stupid.

IMHO

A boilermaker with lemon and limeaid? What freak came up with that?
And Pendleton Whiskey is made and blended in Canada. It's only bottled in Pendleton. Same with all the boutiqe Portland vodkas. Made elsewhere, bottled here.

Pendelton Whiskey = HRD vodka + caramel coloring

When I was young, the drink of choice for hunting/logging camps was cowboy coffee and Jim Beam.

I beg to differ with you. I actually like Pendelton and I have drank a lot of different booze in my time. It's not the best, but pretty good. Now HRD vodka is a different matter.

Not likely. Any Canadian Whisky brought into the U.S. is made in Canada not in the U.S.

It is illegal to state on the label of any bottle that it is Canadian if it truly was not.

It is brought into the U.S. in containers and it is bottled in Pendleton.

My favorite Canadian Whisky would be Snake River Stampede which is another locally bottled product from Eastern Oregon.

Following that would be my favorite Single Malt Scotch Whisky being MaCallan.

McMenamin's Terminal Gravity IPA

Terminal gravity is its own brewery, and has it own IPA. Good, but not related to McMenamin's. They do have some of there own tasty IPA's as well.

Not nit picking on you, just clarifying.

It's not, it's bottled in Hood River. At least last time I checked HRD was in Hood River

As far as the Oregon cocktail goes, I'll take my whiskey and beer seperately forget the other crap.

Your correct, it is bottled at Hood River Distilleries.

Just to throw this out there too, HRD Vodka is not made by Hood River Distilleries. It is reject Vodka brought in by the barrel loads that other countries cannot sell due to the quality inspections not being passed.

At this point HRD Distilleries re works the Vodka to make it pass their guidelines before it goes on the U.S. market for sale.

I have worked for the OLCC for 10 years, this is how I know this. It is not second hand information.

I have no control over ordering products, that is not my department.

Although I can talk to some folks and see why it has not been brought in, and if we can get it in we can see what time line we are looking at.

Hold tight, I will look into it on Monday and post back in here.

Jim Beam Rye is offered in the state, it is what we call a special listings item since it has a code # of 8000+. This type of listing signifies it is a limited quantity basis, and to get the product back in it can take weeks to months pending many different things.

Now to the availability of it is another issue, I will check into it today to see if there are any stores that currently carry it on their shelf or if everyone is still waiting on the state to bring the next batch in.

It is currently available in the state, there are a lot of local Portland area liquor stores that have it on hand as we speak and it is selling for $15.95 for 750ml.

Hopefully this helps you out.

Really?  Cool, thanks for lookin'!

Is there a "short list" of who to try?

You should be able to find it at quite a few West side locations, maybe Uptown Liquor, Downtown Liquor, and on the east side I believe it will be sold at the Gateway location too and a few others.
