Fellow Oregonians, help me make a decision! The company I work for is closing it's operations in Oregon, and I've been scheduled to be layed-off on 06-30-05. I've known this was coming for well over a year now, so it's no big surprise. Today, I was formally offered a position with the company in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I'm still in the process of negotiating the deal, but I'm not under any pressure to accept it - if I turn down the transfer offer, I still retain my severance package, and will be able to take advantage of training money via the Trade Act deal, so I've got options. All personal and financial considerations aside, what I want from you folks are reasons to stay in Oregon, as opposed to moving to New Mexico. Thanks in advance! |
Oh, I'm not thinking savings, I'm thinking hassle. I hate rolling into Costco or wherever I get gas at, and having to wait 5 minutes for them to even start pumping. That's what I loved about my roadtrip from New Jersey to Oregon - the startpoint (Jersey) and endpoint (Oregon) have those stupid self-service laws, but everywhere in between, I pulled in, slotted my card, pumped my tank full, and drove off, all in the span of five minutes. These days, it's a 10-15 minute chore to get gas in Oregon. |
I don't care about Costco since they don't seel fuel anywhere near my place. I expect diesel prices will fall back below unleaded in the future. When I first bought my truck 2 years ago regular unleaded was $.45+ more per gallon than diesel. So if I average out I'm still better off! ;-) |

Well you wanted reasons to stay.....so.... Assuming you are in the Portland area... 1) 1.5 hrs to the coast 2) 1.5 hrs to the mountains 3) 2.5 hrs to the desert 4) same time for many places to shoot 5) We are machine gun friendly ( so far anyway ) 6) If you take Multnomah county out of the equation, the rest of the state's just fine 7) If you run away, that's one less vote for the "GOOD" side......meaning gun owners in general, not necissarily one party or the other.....if that's possible.... 8) What the heck is there in New Mexico besides cacti anyway? But it sounds like you've allready made up your mind from what you're saying......If the only thing you can come up with is pumping your own gas.... ![]() |
| Do you hunt? From what I've heard, most of the places to go for Elk in NM are reserved for the guides. You have to pay the big bucks to get anything. I think there was a big deal about reserving tags for the people with guide franchises from the state and keeping locals from getting them. Otherwise, I hate the desert, but that's just me. |
Or a motorcycle. Of course the "safety professional" has to pull the hose from the pump and flip the lever. ![]() I tell 'em "I'm from Texas and even we're smart enough to pump our own gas." Of course all I get is that blank stare. Those "safety professionals" are hard to impress. |

How strong are your ties to Oregon? For me my family homesteaded about 30 miles from me and we have our land and my family in about a 45 mile radias. My parents live down in Southern Cal but this is home to me. I don't look at it as Oregon Politics keep me here or scare me away but more as "This is my Home." Patty |
