This is gonna sound strange, but I'm 30 years old and want to be adopted. My stepfather has said be fore that he regretted not legally adopting me for the past 25 years, and I don't think he knows it is still possible. But to my knowledge it can be done, and I would like to present him with adoption papers for his birthday in February. I just can't seem to figure out where or how to start this process. Do I need a lawyer? Can I just get generic papers and see a judge or what? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

ex wife did something similar... If I remember rightly she just had a lawyer draw up the papers. It didn't cost much and was very quick. I'd ask her but.... she hates me :D

I wouldn't ask you to do that, lol. Ex's are ex's for a reason. But that info gets me closer. First step may be to contact a lawyer. Thank you.

I know nothing about the adoption process, but I'd be willing to bet that Doug King could advise you, and possibly draw the papers up for you. When it comes to legal matters making a call to Doug King first, is always a good idea!!!

I will IM his phone number to you.

Keeping his number in your phone for emergencies is not a bad idea either!!!

I would consult a lawyer that specializes in family law. There are some very good ones out there that are familiar with what they are doing.

Adoptions do not require a lawyer. My parents have adopted 6 ask for just the cost of court fees.
