Anybody going to Dragon Con this year? I'll be there Sunday hopefully, maybe Sat night if I get froggy. |
|
Always. Thursday through Monday, may have to birddog John Ringo at times since his personal assistant will be busy working for the convention most of the time. There will be a book launch party for his book Monster Hunter Memoirs: Grunge on Sunday night from 6-8pm, should be in room 1605 of the Hyatt, but that may change. |

This will be the first that I have missed in quite a few years. I have a great excuse, though. The wife and I are going to Ireland for the Georgia Tech game. Tech has to go that far to find someone to beat? ![]() Yeah, it seems kind of unfair. North Carolina only had to go to Atlanta to find their cupcake.

The wife and I are going to Ireland for the Georgia Tech game. Tech has to go that far to find someone to beat? ![]() Hah. Although my kid brother went to the Citadel, the coach there would schedule one or two games against major teams a year because the media money from those games would pay for the rest of their season, and they played GT his sophomore year. I think by the end of the game, Tech was putting jerseys on the water boys and putting them on the field, trying to keep the score from getting too lopsided... Of course, I was at Tech for the 90-91 season, so anything since then has been a let down... |
Going to miss it this year. Got a babby due in October, and I really don't need to be partying with 10,000 of my closest friends and their germs when there's not much I can take if I get sick. Plus I'm not up for all the walking, and the medic crew damn sure doesn't want to have to delivery a babby in the middle of the convention!

Guess there's no point messaging you to tell you when our group's room party is open :-) |

I may take my daughter, but we've never been. Any tips from the folks that go regularly? What about carrying, as a Fed LEO? Tips: Don't impede the flow of people. Parking sucks, earlier is better Ask before taking a picture of someone's costume. They appreciate it and almost always say yes. It's generally considered rude to shoot one without asking. There will be lines, take something to occupy yourself. I've carried every year, never been made, nobody cared. Of all the people I know, you can manage to not get made. Have fun, it's kinda awesome. Sadly, I'll be working this year. Doc |
| I've been twice in the last 4 years, but just as a spectator. I roam around the street and into hotel lobbies to look at the freaks. Carried my Harrison LW Commander IWB, spare mag, J frame, with speed strip and a Benchmade folder. Wear shorts and loose shirt, it will be very hot and the freaks smell. Park a way off and walk toward the center, that way you can see all the characters on your way in and out. Carry water and snacks. |

Sometimes APD has jumpy junior officers in the area who get twitchy if they see weapons that aren't peace bonded. There are three levels of security people - convention security, hotel security, and the on site law enforcement. There are no metal detectors or wands, only convention badge checks. If you make it in the evenings, stop by room 1605 in the Hyatt, the bar tender is my wife, just tell them you know me. |

I'd like to know when he is going to finish the Posleen War series

My only gripe with him and I know it's probably unfair is that he has too many unfinished series out there. |

Quoted: I watched about half an hour of the parade on tv. Honestly, didn't look very exciting. ![]() As for carry, this year seemed uncharacteristically cool, so cover garments were easier. That said, this crowd is one I'm not too worried about carrying in. I've been there several times, often from dawn till nearly dawn again. I've never seen any fights and the security presence is pervasive. Low key, as they often just seem to be another .mil themed set of cosplayers, but they're there. I've done it before, but I chose not to carry this time. With all the walking I do, its like extreme hiking -- every once counts. Also, when you're navigating blocks and blocks of shoulder-shoulder crowds, its one less thing to have to pay attention to. |

My only gripe with him and I know it's probably unfair is that he has too many unfinished series out there. John is a burst writer - he mulls a story idea over in his head for a while (can be years, in fact), then once he has it all worked out in his head, he sits down and writes it, that's how he can knock out a book in a couple of weeks - if you only count the time spent in front of the keyboard as "writing time". The downside to that is that he has to be interested in a given story before he's able to write it, he's tried writing like David Weber, David Drake, Larry Correia and others who sit down and write every day, and it doesn't work for him. He initially announced he was done with the Posleen series after Hell's Faire, which finished up the story arc of the defense of Earth, but there was a clamor from the fans to continue, so he wrote the outline for _Cally's War_ and had Julie Cochrane write it, with some guidance from him, along with allowing Tom Kratman to write several stories in the universe. Unfortunately, I think the issues Julie had while writing _Honor of the Clan_ may have pushed him away from that universe for a period of time, other than writing _Eye of the Storm_. The Council Wars series (There Will Be Dragons, Emerald Sea, Against the Tide, and East of the Sun, West of the Moon) just wasn't selling as well as most Ringo books, so he was encouraged by Jim Baen to move on to something new. After the Council Wars, he started the Looking Glass series with Travis Taylor, Travis has been pretty busy lately which has prevented them from making much progress on the next book in that universe. For the Prince Roger/March series, he's waiting on David Weber to look over what he's started for the next book before he goes much further, there are also some sections David needs to write that are more of his type of writing than John's (political machinations and such). The Special Circumstances/Wands series has always been slow for him to write, no clue on when the next book might be written. Von Neumann's War and The Last Centurion are stand alone novels. The Paladin of Shadows/Ghost series, he has the manuscript from the coauthor for the next book, I thought it was much better in draft form than what got published for Tiger by the Tail, but there's a good bit of editing that still needs to be done, and I don't know when that'll happen. Monster Hunter Memoirs: Grunge just came out, the second book, Sinners, is on track for a December release, the third book, Saints, still has some significant editing to be completed before it's ready for publication, those are the only books John currently plans to write in that universe. The first story arc of the Black Tide Rising universe is complete with the four books plus the anthology, he's starting to collect stories for the next anthology, along with contracts with at least two other authors to write books in that universe (Mike Massa, former US Navy SEAL officer will be writing the story of the uncle who gave the family the warning, Sarah Hoyt will also be writing a book in the universe, after her initial story idea for the first anthology grew a bit too long). There are some other projects with coauthors that are still too early in the process to discuss publicly. |

Of course, I write the above, and today he's on FaceBook asking people to look up a couple of names from _Eye of the Storm_, although he's not promising anything right now, but he's at least starting to think about that universe again... |
